Electrical vs. Industrial Engineering
I’m a high school student trying to choose between Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, and I’m considering universities in both Europe and the United States. I want to be honest: I’m not currently passionate about Electrical Engineering specifically. A major reason I’m considering it is the career opportunities and earning potential, and I’m willing to work very hard to become good at it. I’m currently doing AS-Level Math and Physics, but I would describe myself as an average student in math/science rather than naturally gifted. Industrial Engineering is actually the engineering field I’m most interested in because I like the combination of engineering, business, economics, optimization, and problem-solving. However, I’m worried about the job market and earning potential for Industrial Engineers, especially in Europe and the US. For someone with my background: 1. How difficult is Electrical Engineering actually at university? 2. Can an average math/science student realistically succeed in EE with enough studying, tutoring, and persistence? 3. What are the main career paths and earning potential for Electrical vs. Industrial Engineering in Europe and the US? 4. Is choosing EE mainly for its stronger job market and salary potential a reasonable decision if I don’t currently have a strong interest in electricity/electronics? 5. If you were in my position, would you choose the field you find more interesting (Industrial Engineering) or the one with potentially stronger technical career opportunities (Electrical Engineering)? 6. What do you wish you had known before choosing your engineering major? I’d especially appreciate answers from people who have actually studied or worked in Electrical or Industrial Engineering.
What did you do to discern what career to pursue?
I’m a high school senior, and I’m currently undecided on what major to pursue in college. I’ve always loved playing guitar and singing, but I’m unsure if this will be a secure career for me if I’d also like to attend college. So I’ve looked to engineering, even though the most engineering I’ve done was during middle school. I’ve looked into sound engineering and also I’ve gotten curious about biomedical engineering, because I think it’d be cool to program robots or design new tech in the medical field. I just want to have a stable career after college, so I want to make sure I choose a major that I’ll love but will also grant me financial security.

How did you choose which engineering path to choose I am planning to major in Computer Engineering but so many of the engineering fields seem closely related, and it is hard for me to picture how these majors translate to specific careers.?
I am a senior in high school and starting at Syracuse University in the Fall.
I am interested in computer science, and the best computer science programs are at large research institutions; YET the most appealing campuses for me have had smaller student bodies. Where can I find a combination of these attributes, giving me the best of both worlds? #Spring26
For example, I love Davidson College, but Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech have much better computer majors and opportunities. Is there a small school out there that has great computer science??

I am 19, I graduated high-school last year. I was class of 2025 in June. My original plan was to attend college like everyone and my parents wanted. I did online but things got hectic for me so I left. I've never had a job. I know that writing is my passion. I would love to become an Author one day. What advice do you have for someone choosing a double major?
I know that being a musical theater major does not guarantee a financially sustainable career. I would like to double major in something that would allow me to have a stable career option with flexibility to perform and pursue my passion.

What College Would Be Best For Me?
I was wondering what college might be best for me. I am a very hard worker and believe that I would be capable of getting into a tough to get into school.
