How did you choose which engineering path to choose I am planning to major in Computer Engineering but so many of the engineering fields seem closely related, and it is hard for me to picture how these majors translate to specific careers.?

I am a senior in high school and starting at Syracuse University in the Fall.

You can shape your future by discovering what you love, what you're good at, and what you want in your career. Don't stress about the overlap in engineering fields; see it as a great chance. This flexibility lets you work in various companies or switch fields if your interests change. Computer Engineering is perfect if you like creating devices, working with electronics, or programming systems. It combines hardware and software, covering areas like circuits, embedded systems, robotics, and networking.

Engage in workshops, labs, co-ops, and projects like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or robotics competitions. Join engineering clubs and hackathons to find your passion. Learn about different careers through daily work, research, industry trends, and talks with faculty, students, or professionals. Shadowing engineers can also help you see how majors lead to real-world jobs. Along the way, you'll gain valuable skills like programming, problem-solving, and teamwork.

In your first year, take basic courses to explore both fields and decide which suits your interests and goals best. If your university offers Electrical and Computer Engineering, pursue it. If not, consider Computer Engineering or Computer Science, especially if you excel in math and programming, love technology, and want a high-paying, tech-focused career.

Evan, begin by figuring out what interests you most in Computer Engineering, like development or support. Check out major tech company websites to see the roles they offer. Engineering jobs, especially in AI, are growing. Many tech companies have student intern programs where you can try different areas to find what you enjoy. In college, you can start with general studies and decide later on your specialty. Tech is a field full of opportunities, so keep an open mind. Remember, you don't need to know everything when you start college. Good luck and enjoy your time there!

That's a great question! I felt the same way when I was exploring engineering majors. They can look quite similar at first, so it's normal to feel a bit unsure. A helpful approach is to think about the kinds of problems or projects you enjoy, as this often makes your path clearer over time. Since you're already thinking about Computer Engineering, you're off to a great start. As you dive into classes, projects, and internships, you'll start to see how each major links to different careers.
