How long do you suggest taking in between undergraduate and graduate school?

Hi! I am currently in my second year of undergraduate studies, pursuing a degree in architecture. I would like to take some time between my undergraduate and graduate studies to travel and seek an internship. However, I'm wondering how long is too long to wait before starting graduate school. Would it be easier to build my career in the field if I began my graduate studies immediately after completing my undergraduate degree?

Hi Irene,

That's a great question. Graduate school is really about finding your path and building momentum. If you're aiming for an academic career, jumping into grad school right after your undergrad might be the best move.

However, if you're looking at a professional path or something related to architecture, like travel, taking a break could be part of your career journey. Just keep in mind, the longer you wait, the tougher it might be to adjust back to the busy life of grad school, so make sure you have a clear plan.

Lloyd L.’s Answer

I suggest you see the world and travel around before grad school. As someone who has worked almost non-stop since the age of 22 (37 years now), I can confidently say that it gets more difficult to find time away and really relax, travel, and explore. Also, one's stamina doesn't remain the same. My longest vacation, a trip to Europe, was a month in 1996. So...live a little and go for it!
