Is pursuing a bachelor’s in Biotechnology in Malaysia a good decision in terms of long-term career prospects ?
I am currently facing a career decision and would like guidance.
I originally wanted to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, but many people around me are advising me to reconsider because they believe the field has limited job opportunities and low market demand. I applied to NUST for Biotechnology, but due to limited preparation time I did not score well enough to secure admission (although final merit lists have not been released yet, my chances seem low based on my marks).
Before that, I had also applied to universities abroad, including Malaysia and Turkey. However, after deciding to stay in Pakistan, most of the application deadlines for Turkish and other universities passed, except for Malaysia. I have now received offers from two Malaysian universities: Taylor’s University with a 50% scholarship and INTI University with a 45% scholarship.
However, I am now hearing concerns that Malaysia also does not have a strong biotechnology job market, which is making me reconsider my decision.
At the same time, I am thinking about whether it would be possible or realistic to go to another country for higher studies (Master’s or further education) after completing my bachelor’s degree in Malaysia.
Given all of this, I would like advice on the following:
Is pursuing a bachelor’s in Biotechnology in Malaysia a good decision in terms of long-term career prospects? And is it a viable pathway to later pursue higher studies or work opportunities in other countries, even if the local Malaysian biotech job market is limited?

One concern is that the biotechnology job market in Malaysia is relatively small compared to some developed countries. This means that finding highly specialized biotechnology jobs immediately after graduation may be challenging. However, graduates can also work in related sectors such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food technology, quality control, laboratory services, and research institutions.
A degree from a recognized Malaysian university can also help you pursue higher studies abroad. Many students continue their Master’s or PhD studies in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. Strong academic performance and research experience during your bachelor’s degree can improve these opportunities.
If your long-term goal is an international career, Malaysia can serve as a stepping stone. The degree itself is generally accepted internationally, especially when earned from a reputable university.

Don't make your decisions based on hear say. Do your own research. I quickly googled Biotechnology employment in Malaysia and also Pakistan. While your opportunities are limited in Pakistan they are not non existent. In Pakistan you will want to be located in one of the urban centers like:
Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.
In Malaysia on the other hand, prospects are high and rapidly growing in all sectors: Pharmaceuticals, Therapeutics, Medical Devices, Agri-biotech, Commercial and Technical Sales.
Now to the educational component of your query.
Scholarships are always a bonus, as education is expensive. The question you have to ask yourself, can I be away from family in Malaysia. If the answer is no, then that may help answer your thoughts to the above.
Remaining in Pakistan for education, means you have missed some critical deadlines and lacked the focus to meet this years requirements. Maybe look into an internship opportunity. Glaxo-Smith Kline in Karachi offers 6 - 8 week positions to see if this is really a good fit for you. It looks like Karachi is your best bet with Getz Pharma's "Next lead Summer Internship Program", Abbot Pakistan's "Student internship Program" and Lahore offers internships at Ferozson Laboratories and BF Bio Sciences

Studying in Malaysia can be a good option, especially if you're attending a reputable university with a scholarship. Your bachelor's degree is only one part of your career journey. What will matter just as much are your grades, laboratory skills, internships, research experience, and professional network. If your goal is eventually to study or work in countries such as Canada, Australia, the UK, Germany, or the US, a strong academic record from a recognized Malaysian university can absolutely serve as a stepping stone.
Before making your final decision, compare the universities based on their research facilities, industry partnerships, internship opportunities, graduate outcomes, and faculty expertise not just rankings. Also, ask yourself whether you genuinely enjoy biotechnology. If your interest is driven by curiosity about science and innovation, you'll be more motivated to build the experience needed for long-term success.
My advice is this: don't choose or reject biotechnology solely because of the current local job market. Choose it if it aligns with your interests and you're prepared to actively build your skills throughout your degree. Students who combine their education with research, internships, and continuous learning often have far more career opportunities than those who rely on the degree alone.

I think the first thing to remember is that you should separate two different questions: "Is biotechnology a good field?" and "Is Malaysia the right place to study it?" They are related, but they're not the same thing.
Biotechnology is a legitimate and growing field, but it is also true that it can be more competitive than many students expect. A bachelor's degree alone may not always lead directly to high-paying industry roles. Many biotechnology graduates strengthen their prospects through research experience, internships, specialized skills, or postgraduate study. That doesn't mean the degree is a bad choice. It just means it's important to go into it with realistic expectations.
As for Malaysia, I would focus less on whether you plan to work there permanently and more on whether the university can give you a strong academic foundation. Many international students complete their bachelor's degrees in one country and then pursue master's degrees or careers elsewhere. What often matters most is your academic performance, research experience, laboratory skills, publications, internships, and professional network.
If your long-term goal is to pursue graduate studies abroad, a biotechnology degree from a reputable Malaysian university can absolutely be a stepping stone. Students regularly move from Malaysia to countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, and other destinations for master's and doctoral programs.
