How can I combine architecture and interior design in my future career?

I am a high school graduate passionate about both architectural spaces and interior design. I would love to hear from professionals about how to balance both fields, and whether I should focus on architecture first in college. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Hi Anfel!! I think it’s great that you’ve already identified two areas you’re passionate about. Architecture and interior design actually complement each other very well, so you don’t necessarily have to choose one forever.

If I were in your position, I would start with architecture because it gives you a strong foundation in design, structures, and planning. Later, you can specialize in interior design through electives, certifications, internships, or even a master’s degree if you decide that’s the direction you enjoy most.

While you’re in college, I’d also recommend building a portfolio, learning design software, and looking for internships. Those experiences will help you discover which aspects of each field you enjoy the most.

Remember that your first degree doesn’t have to limit your future—it can be the foundation for combining both interests. I wish you all the best!

Hi Anfel,

It is wonderful to hear that you are passionate about both architecture and interior design.

They are two fascinating professions that -as Diana mentioned- complement each other extremely well, and in many projects architects and interior designers work closely together to create successful spaces.

The most important question to ask yourself is not which degree comes first, but where you want to make the greatest impact.

Architects are primarily responsible for the overall design of a building. They focus on its structure, functionality, safety, regulations, and how the building relates to its surroundings. Interior designers, on the other hand, concentrate on how people experience the spaces inside those buildings. We shape environments by considering layout, materials, lighting, colours, furniture, wellbeing, and the way people interact with a space every day.

Neither profession is more important than the other—they simply approach the same project from different perspectives.

If you find that you enjoy thinking about buildings as a whole, architecture may be the right path. If you are more interested in how people feel, live, work, or heal within those spaces, interior design could be an excellent choice. Of course, many professionals develop knowledge in both fields throughout their careers, making collaboration even more effective.

My advice would be to stay curious. Visit architecture and design exhibitions, attend industry events whenever possible, explore completed projects, and follow professionals whose work inspires you. You can also begin familiarising yourself with software commonly used in both disciplines, such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, or Adobe Creative Suite. You do not need to master them now, but becoming familiar with these tools will give you a valuable head start.

Most importantly, remember that your career is a journey. Whatever path you choose first, there will always be opportunities to broaden your knowledge and combine both disciplines as you grow professionally.

I wish you every success on your journey—I have no doubt that your enthusiasm will take you far.

May the Force be with you!
