Shelly’s Answer
While my background is not as a full-time Financial Analyst, I have worked closely with finance, consulting, and analytics teams throughout my career. A typical day often includes reviewing financial and operational data, building or updating Excel models, analyzing trends and variances, preparing reports and presentations for stakeholders, and participating in meetings to discuss business performance or project updates. Excel is used extensively, while tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SAP, Oracle, or Bloomberg may be used depending on the industry and role. Many organizations now operate in a hybrid environment, with collaboration taking place through Microsoft Teams or similar platforms. One thing that often surprises students is that the role involves as much communication and problem-solving as it does working with numbers, since financial analysts regularly explain insights and recommendations to colleagues and business leaders.
