Sahida’s Answer
Both AI/ML and cybersecurity have great long-term potential. AI/ML offers more growth, while cybersecurity provides a solid career path. For a first-year CSE student, the best approach is to develop a strong CS foundation and explore both fields for 12 to 18 months.
According to the World Economic Forum's 2025 report, AI, big data, and cybersecurity are some of the fastest-growing skills through 2030. Careers in AI/ML and information security are also among the fastest-growing tech jobs.

Hello Tej,
Both are great choices. Cybersecurity is more about protecting systems, networks, and cloud infrastructure, while AI/ML focuses more on programming, data, math, and building intelligent systems. Since you're interested in both, try a small project in each and see which type of work you enjoy more. You can also combine them later through AI security or ML security.

Hi Tej,
I work in network design, with a strong cybersecurity focus. As Sandeep said, completing a project in each area is a great place to start. TryHackMe.com has a free access tier to learn cybersecurity basics. Also, isc2.org publishes their Certified in Cybersecurity curriculum online for free.
AWS SKill Builder offers great, free resources to their platform for many AWS products, including Machine Learning and Security. I recommend using these free resources to explore the discipline, and consider obtaining certifications later if you choose.
I think you will find a lot of overlap between the two, and getting hands-on experience is a great way to decide which route you'd like to pursue. Best of luck.
Cheers,
Kenny

It’s awesome that you’re looking at both cybersecurity and AI/ML—they are hands-down two of the coolest, most impactful fields in tech right now. You really can’t go wrong with either, but here’s the real talk on how they stack up, what the journey actually looks like, and how to figure out where you will shine.
The Big Picture: What’s the Vibe?
Cybersecurity is all about adversary thinking and defense. You’re the digital security guard, investigator, and firefighter all rolled into one. Your mindset is constantly: "How could someone break this, and how do we stop them?"
AI/ML, on the other hand, is about building intelligence out of data. You’re part mathematician, part software architect. Your mindset is: "How can we teach a machine to spot patterns, automate this, or solve a problem on its own?"
What the Skills Actually Look Like
If you go the Cyber route: You’ll get deep into networking (how data moves), operating systems (Linux internals), cloud security, and scripting (Python, Bash). It’s heavily about understanding how entire systems fit together under the hood.
If you go the AI/ML route: You’ll be living in Python, statistics, linear algebra, calculus, and frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow. It’s less about infrastructure and much more about data pipelines, model training, and math-driven problem solving.
The Bottom Line: How to Choose
Forget about which industry hype cycle is bigger right now. Tech changes fast, but excellence never goes out of style. Pick where you can be better than the rest
The real secret to a great career is picking the path where your natural curiosity drives you to get really good at what you do.
Choose Cyber if: You love breaking things down to see how they work, solving high-stakes puzzles, and outsmarting opponents.
Choose AI/ML if: You love math, patterns, data, and building smart software from scratch.
Find the one that makes you want to tinker on a random Tuesday night just for fun. That’s the field where you’ll crush it.

I have no experience in either, but I wanted to help regardless. From my search, either one can lead to an engineering job, if that is something you are interested with pursuing. Best of luck to you.

Tej,
Both choices are great! I have been working in cyber for almost 10 years. My current job in in AppSec . AppSec is still growing field. You securing applications from the code level. You don’t have to be a developer but know some coding like python is good. AI is still emerging with AppSec so I would learn everything you can about AI threats and how they impact systems. This a proactive field so you would learn so much.
