Hello,
Good question! I have worked in the technical and manufacturing industry for more than 5 years, and I have seen some big changes in technology. For example, when I was in college from about 2016 to 2020, self-driving cars were not a reality yet because the technology wasn’t ready. One of my old mentors worked on projects with this kind of technology back in the early 2000s. Today, in 2026, self-driving cars are real. Many car companies offer models with some kind of autonomous driving mode. In larger cities, robot taxis are very popular and give people safe, convenient rides.
My mentor is a perfect example for your question. His hobbies, like building battle bots, connected directly to his autonomous vehicle projects in college.
Some of this technology has been 20+ years in the making. For you, my advice is to think about your interests and how technology affects them. That is your best path to making a real impact. Finally, keep up with new technology, because it is always changing.
