Hi Jannel!

Great Question! I've been a nurse for 10 years. I started out with my ADN (2 yr RN program) passed the NCLEX and got my 1st job in Pedi Urgent Care. I received my 1st pay increase 6 months after I started working. It was small...like .50 cents and hour then again in 6 months I received a $2.00 pay increase. I also went back to school for my BSN (another 2 years of school) and received not only a pay increase but my company (as do many others) gave me $2,000.00 a year to put towards school.

Hope this was helpful!

Lisa

I had regular step increases in wages as a new RN (anywhere from .50 to $1 per hour increases per year) for the first 5 years. However, It wasn't until I obtained my BSN and began moving up in leadership roles when I began really increasing my salary. If you remain a staff nurse (RN) you will only have relatively small increases in pay but leadership positions offer a lot of salary increase (along with responsibility). I would like to mention that I would advise against stopping at an LPN level. There are simply not a lot of job opportunities for them any longer and there is a huge difference in pay between an LPN and an RN. The RN education is absolutely the way to go! If you have leadership potential, the salary opportunities can be great!
