What should I do going into college?

I'm a decent all-round student for my core classes where I will do 1 AP class for all 4 which include English, Social Studies, Math and Science by graduation. I have not done an AP test yet to know what I am good or bad at and I have no clue if it is a good idea to base this decision off these classes. Problem is I dont really like doing any work from any of the classes I am or have taken. Nor do I dislike any either I just dont know where I want to go with this. I dont know any career that I have any interest in. All I know is that I'll need a plan going into college to survive how expensive it is. As far as the future is looking, it is just plain stupid not to go through college. I am at a loss, any guidance would be greatly appreciated. #college #career #college-advice #undecided #college-planing

Try an Interdisciplinary, Liberal Studies, or General Studies major, that will let you combine multiple interests. Or an Individually Designed major that you can even name yourself.

Eric’s Answer

When trying to decide your college major, I think it is important to think long and hard about what you are interested in and what you can see your self doing for a living after you graduate. If you cannot think of any subjects or career fields that interest you, consider starting with a broad major, like business management. Once you start taking general business classes you will likely find a more specific subject that you are interested in and excel in, like economics, marketing, or accounting. Then you can either minor in one of those subjects or switch your major altogether if it is not too late. If it makes you feel better, I went to college for international relations and ended up working in an entirely different career field (finance), so you are not necessarily stuck with what you major in! That being said, it would have been much easier for me to get into my current position if I had chosen a more broad major to begin with.

Eric recommends the following next steps:

Search the internet for career descriptions and try to find some that interest you. Then look at job postings for those positions and find out what college majors the employers are looking for in the ideal candidate.

Hi Morrow,

Try thinking about other activities that you enjoy and how you might build a career around that. Education is important, but it's rarely a good predictor at what kind of job or career you are well-suited for - only you can decide that!

You may also want to look into some job-shadowing opportunities. For a while, I thought I wanted to be a registered nurse - but then I job-shadowed a labor/delivery nurse and discovered it was DEFINITELY not for me!

Worst case scenario, you can discuss with your college academic adviser about starting with an "undeclared major" or a "general studies" major for your first two years. This will allow you to take some basic required courses (like English, History, etc.) while you try figuring out which direction you want to go.

Hope this helps!
