Estelle’s Answer

Dental hygienists are the people that clean your teeth and perform screening exams and x-rays of your teeth and mouth. They work under a dentist who is their supervisor. Training to become a licensed dental hygienist takes at least 2 years.

Josephine’s Answer

Omar - A dental hygienist is the person at the dentists office that cleans your teeth and examines them for any signs of oral diseases.  They might also be responsible for taking x-rays of your teeth and gums.  The dental hygienist will educate patients on how to improve and maintain good oral health.

Josephine recommends the following next steps:

Go out to the American Dental Association website to learn more.

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Omar:

Thank you for your question. I agree that the previous comment is on point with what does it mean to be a dental hygienist. I'd like to add that in becoming a dental hygienist typically you'll need an associate's degree in dental hygiene. Programs usually take 3 years to complete. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed; requirements may vary by state.

Sheila recommends the following next steps:

Research the American Dental Association (ADA) website - - > https://www.ada.org/en/about-the-ada
Research Bureau of Labor Statistics website. Make sure to navigate through all the tabs - -> https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/dental-hygienists.htm#tab-2
