Hi Isaac, a typical work day would depend on many factors such as the work that you do, the industry, your job position, and so on. For example, a typical work day for me starts at 7:30 am and I usually drink my coffee while looking at my emails and meetings that I have scheduled for that particular day. After that, I look at the priorities and try to work on the projects or tasks that are time sensitive and should be worked first. I really enjoyed what I do and although work can be sometimes stressful, I feel very bless that I have a job that I really like. It's very important that you choose a degree and career that you really enjoy as that will make you happy at work :)

Some advice to you is that you should really Enjoy your time in school because time passes by so quickly! so have fun :)

Kader Jean Gustave’s Answer

Hi Isaac, this is a very good question. There’s level of responsibilities and tasks depending on the position or title you may have as electrician. We have Electrical Engineers and Technicians. Engineers will concept projects and technicians will execute following specifications received from Engineers. So what an Engineer does exactly? He/She/They is/are responsible of creativity, drawings, Estimating, bidding,Managing with Clients and Contractors and others supervisory responsibilities. What does a Technician do? A technician is responsible of executing drawings, reading interpreting them and installing wires and connecting them with Anything that will have to use Electricity like Lights Caméras Automatic doors Elevators pretty much anything. It is really depends also on which projects you are working on. High rise buildings core in shell, residential buildings, Industrial installations... Do remember one thing it is always fun if it is your passion.

Kader Jean Gustave recommends the following next steps:

Let me know which one you want to be? An Engineer or A technician.

Hey Isaac, I volunteered my services as an electrician to help out with Habitat for Humanity. Because I was working with houses it's classified as "Residential Construction Electrician". Monday/Friday I had to drive to the job site and be ready to work at 8 am which was usually a different address every 1-2 days. We would work until 3 unless we were pretty close to finishing the job. There are 3 stages of the house being built that mattered to me, the "Service", "Rough In", and the "Finish".
The service was installing the breaker box. This is done when the house is just a cement floored hole in the ground. For a service, we read a floor plan, decide where the best location for the box to go, then mount it into the concrete. The next step is to install a meter and pedestal on the outside of the house and terminate wires to connect them. The last step is to cover it in plastic and let the Utility company connect it to a power line. This would usually take 2-3 hours so we could do a few of these in a day.
The rough in is when the the house is a skeleton with siding and a roof. During this stage of construction we hammer all the outlet boxes for the receptacles, lights, ceiling fans, clocks, and doorbells into the exposed studs. Once all of those are measured out and installed, we pull the wire to each box, then pull an extra wire down to the breaker box to power them all. Depending on how many people we had working it could take a whole day to a day and a half.
The finish was when all the insulation, flooring, and drywall are installed. Here we would install all the light fixtures, receptacles, doorbells, ceiling fans, ect. These would rarely take more than a day.
Depending on priorities and the time of the year, I would do a service in the morning and maybe start a finish in the afternoon on a different address.
