Good question, and you already have some informative answers already. I think that you will find that most colleges and universities with art departments will have a general "graphic design" courses, and some will have it as a major. Most art schools, however, tend to have more specific in-depth graphic design majors, as in product design, advertising design, and so on. So you might want to think about if you want to attend a college or an art school. As a previous answer pointed out, if you aren't yet sure, the general graphic design major would probably be the way to go. Hopefully you will have an internship with your college/university course of studies, and that would allow you to experience a more specific graphic design field up close.

Ellen recommends the following next steps:

Check out colleges and art schools
Talk to your current art teachers.

It really depends on what form of design you want to do. If you're interest in print design (brochures, t-shirts, banners, booths, signage) then a Graphic Design, Illustration, Brand Design, or Visual Communications major/minor could be a fit. If you want to design interactive digital experiences (websites, software, games, mobile apps) then consider looking for programs in User Experience, User Interface Design, Digital Design, or Game Design.

Graphic design and other design related fields are constantly changing due to new technologies, culture, and other aspects. There's a vast number of majors for you if you're interested in graphic design. It really depends on the university on what design related programs they offer.

I attended a design university and what helped me make that decision was to read through the descriptions of each major and program to see what they offer. Some may be more broad like 'graphic design' and 'product design'. Some may be more specific like 'branding' and 'packaging'. If you're sure you want to pursue a specific niche within design, go for it. If not, maybe a broader major may be more suitable.

Do some google search and look up potential universities you'd consider then drill into the majors from there.
