The economy has been getting better, and there’s a lot of hiring going on. Why did you decide to prioritize this position instead of the many others you could have been hiring for?

Hi Fredi J. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

As I write my response to you in late 2020, I reflect on the fact that when this question was initially posted, there was a fairly strong and growing economy...but then the world experienced the onset of a pandemic. Whether there was or was not a global crisis, I know for myself that I would have maintained my interest in engineering and technology because over the course of my engineering career I have seen what involvement in this field can do for broad sections of government, business, communities and environment.

What the 2020 pandemic brought to light are the many ways that individuals can still engage with each other but using the benefits of technology for connection.

Hope you find this response helpful and best of luck!

Neha’s Answer

The job is the job - but the people and the culture of a company is what stands out to me. If you work in a place where you feel your values match the overall company values - the specific job can always be tweaked and tailored. I've worked in too many companies where the job is great - but the environment isn't.

Neha recommends the following next steps:

Think about what kind of culture you want in your work environment. Is this a company you can see yourself recommending to other people you care about? If it isn't - no job within that company will make you happy long term.

Jeremy’s Answer

Hi Fredi,

When looking for work, I prioritized things I enjoy doing that coincided with the positions I was applying for. Along with that, it's important to understand the company you would be working for and understanding their values, do they match values that you have? Of course, as you get older, it's important to look at the benefits a company offers for its employees (401k, insurance, vacation time, etc.).

M position is titled "Customer Service Delivery", which may make someone think I sit on the phone all day and talk to customers. In reality, customer service is much more than just talking on phones. I work with many different people, hear different stories, get new experiences, and much more. No day is the same, and that was something I wanted when I was searching for work. Along with that, I researched the company before applying and I felt their values tied in with mine.

Work is not purely about your income. If you're only worried about your salary, you're in it for the wrong reasons. The people, environment, and opportunities are also important. Depending on your position, you spend so much time with co-workers and in your work environment. If you cannot function alongside the individuals, or the environment is toxic and unwelcoming, it can really harm your productivity and potentially impact your life outside of work.

Best of luck Fredi!
