The light that is emitted from arc welding will damage your retinas if you do not wear protective goggles. If you've already done this, you should go and see an eye doctor so that any damage can be addressed immediately. This can lead to cataracts or degraded vision later in life.

Agreed with Lance, you'll also get things called "flash burns" which will seems like little dots in your vision (even if you think you're doing it fast enough to look away). Too many of those and it'll cause long term vision loss. Always use a protective mask with a proper gasket and UV protection, most on Amazon are fine, but make an investment and try to get it a at a local shop.
