In the US, to apply to medical school, you need a bachelor's degree. Any 4-year university should suffice.

Pick a college that suits your personality and a major that interests you. You will need to get good grades in college in order to apply for medical school. At the medical school I attended, the average GPA is reported to be 3.85, so even one or two B's can hurt your chances of acceptance.

Aside from this, any major is acceptable as long as you complete the prerequisite courses.

During college study for and complete the MCAT. Apply to medical schools during your last year of college.

Medical school takes 4 years to complete.

After medical school physicians complete a 5 year residency which is sometimes followed by an additional year or two of fellowship subspecialty training. Orthopedic residencies are some of the most competitive, accepting only the top scoring students from medical school.

Kathleen’s Answer

During the last year of medical school you will have opportunities to do rotations (several weeks) in specialties of your choice. It will be important for you to complete one in orthopedics if available to both convince you that you are interested but also to demonstrate your enthusiasm for this specialty. Further if you have the option to travel to another medical school you might consider a short rotation your 4th year with a respected orthopedics program . If you are interested in research there may be opportunities during medical school to work in the labs of leaders in the field of orthopedics.

Rachel’s Answer

Orthopedic surgery requires a medical doctorate. This means that you will have to complete college with a bachelor’s degree as well as all of the Pre-med requirements. GPA should probably be 3.5 or better. You will also have to score well on the MCAT. Once accepted to medical school, you will need to be at the top of your class and perform very well on the STEP I test to secure a 5 year orthopedic residency. It is competitive. You are looking at 13+ years of school after high school.
