John’s Answer

This answer is just my opinion but I am currently enrolled in a few Information Systems Management related courses and am genuinely enjoying them. A few other courses that I have really enjoyed was World Religion and Women's Studies. Both of the courses were eye openers. You don't need to be a feminist or a specific religion to take either, but the information and history surrounding both were quite intriguing.

Just keep in mind, what ever courses you take, make sure the courses you take are able to be applied towads your degree plan so you arent taking too many extra courses during you college adventures.

I would say make sure to be good in classes that are foundational to your life. I would say that being able to communicate well is important in whatever you do. So take speech classes and English classes. There have been several mentions in other posts about getting people skills, so courses that help you learn about the human condition are also good. You may want to consider exploring the arts as well. Arts can change you to be creative in all aspects of your life. Creativity can help you see what was not thought to be possible. And it can help you with good decision making. I think that a well rounded college career would allow you to do all of these types of courses. Expose yourself to different ideas with volunteering or outside of class activities as well. Make sure to engage with people who are come from different backgrounds and even those in college who are older, already work full time, or have engaged in multiple careers.

Hello!

Congrats on narrowing down what you are wanting to focus on during your studies. Since you have a main area of focus, lets verify all of the pre-requisites needed for these majors. I would see where they overlap and start there. Then once you complete these GA pre-reqs, you will be equipped with credit towards a few majors or area of study. It could also lead to a double major down the road. Lastly, don't forget to pepper in a few generals that are truly just to boost some energy in your curriculum and prevent burn out. Try out something new like a dance or poetry class, it could open your mind to a new area of learning.

Happy thoughts!

Hi Carly D.

I recommend taking an intro and/or mid tier statistics course. Having a layman's grasp on averages and data distribution curves can be very helpful, particular in areas where decisions are made with the help of data and analytics.

I also recommend a good English and/or writing course. Strong, effective writing can take you a long, long way. Good luck!

David’s Answer

Classes or courses I would recommend taking for your interest will be introduction to Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Geology and introduction classes. Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, and Criminal Justice are in the same area so your can knock out in one class just to know what Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, and Criminal Justice focus on and the career for them. Geology is about mapping and environment science. Other places you can learn about it is your college department because they have some informational packet about these major and the career that will lead you too when you pick decide which major you will be focusing on.
Thank you comment icon I definitely agree David! Great advice Jessica Watson

Karen’s Answer

Hi Carly,

For me, the best classes to take in college were the general education requirements as they help me decide if I could do the career I wanted and prepared me for a different range of career paths. So I will be using what I learned for the rest of my life.

Think about SOFT SKILLS list (Listening, interpersonal skills, leading, delegating, flexibility, adaptability for change). For example, our Introduction to Interpersonal Communication course is designed to examine, develop, strengthen, and maintain interpersonal relationships. Discussions focus on nonverbal (proxemics, territoriality) and verbal (semantics, paralanguage) communication. Presentations, class discussions, and group techniques are used in class. -KRL

Nina’s Answer

You are looking at some great fields!! The answer would depend on what type of education, criminal-justice, parks-and-recreation and environmental studies you are leaning toward; for example, courses in education can range from community education careers, arts integration, preschool through college/adult ed classroom teaching, online teaching, etc. Criminal justice is a great field as well! Introduction to social justice, sociology, criminal law, community issues such as poverty, women's(or other groups) rights, public policy are some that come to mind. Parks and recreation courses might include courses in community engagement, city planning or public recreation. Environmental studies is also a wide area covering things from global warming, animal species, to factory pollution for example; so maybe think about whether you wanted to learn more about local, national or worldwide issues - that might give you an idea of which roads to start traveling down. The beginning of college is an exciting time, and feel free to ask other questions if needed - hope this was helpful, and good luck!!
