This is a very thorough answer on what it takes to be a biomedical engineer and what they do:

Basically they do anything a systems, electrical, or mechanical engineer might do but with a focus on human physiology and anatomy. The medical device industry touches so many types of products from implanted pacemakers to surgical equipment like ventilators.
