Should I major in general biology or a specific branch of biology?

I want to major in biology, but I am unsure of whether I should keep it general or choose something such as cell biology or human biology. Would general biology be a better choice in terms of finding a job in the sense that it can be applied to a vast variety of jobs as opposed to a specific field? Or would I have a better chance of securing a career with specialization in a certain area? #college #biology #career-path #major #security #specialization

Herman’s Answer

Hi Cynthia,

I personally graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have many friends who also majored in general biology, and we work in similar fields. If you are unsure, you can always change your major during college. I didn't choose my major until the end of my second year of college.

I hope this helps!

Best,
Herman

Hi Cynthia,

I think you should consider Biotechnology - It is a thriving industry and has a broad expanded career circle: Research Scientist, Biotechnologist, Forensic Scientist, Biologist, Pharmacologist, etc... Try to research more on this and you will see how wide of career choices you may have.

Sincerely,

Todd’s Answer

I've found it's often helpful to have a base knowledge of a given topic before specializing. It was true for me in IT and should similarly apply for biology. If following the field (LinkedIn), it may behoove you to find professionals you admire and ask for their advice if you're interested in their career journey. Having a mentor within the same field is of great value.
