What can you do with a sociology degree?

I took a sociology class last quarter, and it's been my most favorite out of every class I've taken. I want to study it in college, but what are my career options if I major in sociology? I am currently in high school and am going to a private four-year college this fall. #career #career-path #careers #sociology #career-plan

A good place to start is with the American Sociology Association, especially their careers page. Even though it looks like a lot of their data is 8 - 10 years old, it does have a lot of resources about jobs for people with Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees in sociology.

Your own sociology department may well be able to help you find other resources. So can the librarians at most college or university libraries. Here, for example, is a page from Sociology and Anthropology Department at The College of New Jersey which will give you a lot of leads for thinking about careers related to sociology.

The answer? Just about anything, as long as you can show the hiring manager how it is that your degree relates to the position you are applying for!

Really!

A liberal arts degree will get your foot in the door for gov't social service programs. I've also seen people go into marketing, advertising, banking, etc. Many times, a degree is just the cost of getting hired, and no one really cares what the degree is in, so long as you have one. Sorry.

However, I majored in Sociology, eons ago, I went on to become a cop, where I got involved in Union activities (budget, research, employee morale proposals, attendance policy revisions, etc). I retired from that and went into job placement at the state workforce office. On a part-time basis, I do some research for attorneys.

My degree taught me to research and write. I hope the program you get into is heavy on term papers. Also, don't just take the easy professors. Get your money's worth, take those that are known as being challenging!

Keep me posted!

Hi Kahley!

You asked a very important question! Here as some sites that will provide much helpful information:

http://sociology.buffalo.edu/

http://asanet.org/

http://www.asanet.org/research/BachelorsinSociology.pdf

http://degreeinsociology.net/career-opportunities-for-sociology-majors/

Since you are in Buffalo, it would be very helpful for you to go to the Head of the Sociology Department and the Head of Alumni Relations to make arrangements to talk with graduates of the University at Buffalo to see what they are doing.

Also try to locate the local chapter of and members of the American Sociology Association and arrange to go to a meeting as a guest. They might also have a student chapter on campus.

Best of luck. Please keep me informed of your progress! Send thank you notes to those who help you.
