Deborah D.’s Answer

When I read your question my first thought was: Why the medical profession at all?
Ask yourself what is attracting you to consider the medical field?
The answer could help to narrow down what you see your self doing.
Often people are inspired by a personal experience or family situations that affected them deeply. People are overcome with a desire to help others in the same way they were helped.
I believe that there are some basic skills that increase the success of being a medical professional.
What are some of the things that you care most deeply about?
What have you seen or done that gives you the most joy?

Something small like a hobby you are already dong may the link to your answer

My perspective, as somebody who began university thinking I would go to medical school, then switched course:
- think about what you like to do and what makes you uncomfortable
- a really great way to have some practical experience is to volunteer in a hospital. This will allow you to see the nuts and bolts of the less glamorous side of the profession and expose you to some of the very real but not often talked about aspects of medical life, such as having to discuss end of life options with patients and their family; dealing with all different kinds of biological waste and dealing with (at least in the US) the increasing amount of paperwork
- if you love medicine but also other topics, think of related fields that could be of interest. There is lots of demand for public health specialists; bioethicists and medical journalists.
- if you are really a nurturer and like the hands-on experience, nurse care practitioner is a great option
- if you like to have a regular schedule, disciplines such as optometry, podiatry, dermatology or dentistry allow you to set your hours to a greater extent than others.
- if you are fascinated by biology and chemistry but do not love interacting with people, research scientists have lots of options.

Good luck!

Tatjana’s Answer

Tough questions as there are so many options.
Reflect honestly on what you want: fame? money? family-life comparable profession? life-long learning on the job? flexibility with chosen career (clinic vs. private practice, possibly international work), duration of training? Lovely team? meaningful and intense interactions with people? do you really like people or is science maybe the better way to go for you?

Prioritize your wishes and choose the field you are most passionate about as you will only be the best at something you're passionate about. Passion will give you the strength to make it through rough patches. Money is a poor motivator, keeps you going only for a little while.

Ask around for internships, some can be as short as a day, to get a feeling for the real work of the different impressions.

Best wishes,
Tatjana
