Janet’s Answer

Hi Jessica,

What typically happens in a dietitian appointment is the RD (Registered Dietitian) will introduce themselves and ask what the patient is there for. Then the RD will ask a number of questions to understand the persons lifestyle and food choices and assess how their answers may have contributed to the reason they are seeking a dietitian's expertise. The RD will proceed to educate and explain to the patient how their food and lifestyle choices may be contributing to their adverse symptoms and/or illness. The RD will then talk to the patient and start suggesting ways to modify their choices to improve outcomes. This is a team approach between the patient and the RD to ensure the recommendations are realistic and actionable. Once a few recommendations are established they close up the session and the RD requests for a follow-up appointment soon thereafter to find out what worked and what didn't. I hope that helps Jessica.

Wayne’s Answer

Hi Jessica. A dietitian is a regulated health professional who is passionate about the potential of food to enhance lives and improve health. Dietitians translate the science of nutrition into terms that any person can understand, without fads or gimmicks. They collaborate with a person to embrace food, to understand it, and to enjoy it.

Dietitians are key members of your health care team and can support people throughout their lives. Here are some of the reasons someone may contact a dietitian:

Diabetes
Heart health
Cancer
Infant feeding and picky eating
Allergies
Digestive concerns
Malnutrition
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Sports nutrition
Vegetarian and vegan diets

The advice and information dietitians provide is tailored to personal needs and challenges, including taste, food skills and accessibility.

Good luck!

Janice’s Answer

Hi Jessica-

Anyone can be referred or visit with a dietician. A dietician is a health team member that will coach the client for health condition management such as weight loss, diabetes, heart conditions. Health conditions may be easier controlled with proper nutrition.

A dietician will discuss typical food choices for a 24 hour period ( a food diary may be requested).

Clients should know their height and weight and present this information to he dietician to determine BMI.

A dietician in consultation with the primary physician may prescribe a specific diet to manage health conditions.

The client should bring questions to ask the dietician regarding food choices.

Good luck!
