Holly’s Answer

I have always loved science and was awed as I learned how the body worked and didn't work. I also love kids - nothing close to holding a newborn in our arms and helping them transition into the world. Kids are also generally healthy- haven't done all the bad things to their bodies yet. Kids are also very honest, so that makes being their doctor so much more fun. It is lots more difficult to deal with emotionally when a child is very sick or dies, because that is so much more devastating than when a 90 year old dies. I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare, but didn't realize I could be a doctor until was a senior in high school. I was at a career day with a friend when a representative from one of the state universities asked if I had ever though about being a doctor.
Obstacles are going to show up no matter how much you try to plan and avoid them. You just roll with the punches and say to yourself "what are my options" and then you choose and go on. I had two children in Medical School and 1 in residency, and I survived and looked at it as a challenge. I was also hit by a drunk driver in college and told I would never walk again, and I just told them to go to hell and I would walk - and I did. It's all in your mindset - you can face your problems head on and deal with them, or you can let them bring you down. It's all your choice and your attitude when you get out of bed each morning. Face life with eagerness and zest, or stand back and let your life go by. You need to decide what your passion is and go after it, because then you feel like you can do anything to get there.

1) love interacting with kids they brighten my day
2)knowing what I wanted was waiting for me as the light at the end of the tunnel. So powered through bad times so I could get to enjoy the good times. Also had an amazing support system (family, husband, friends).
3)no, i originally wanted to be an OBGYN (but later I changed my mind)
4)make sure you’re talking to the right people about the things you want to do. Don’t be afraid to knock on a strangers door and ask for help, you never know when someone will have a similar background and will want to help you
