Chris’s Answer

Hello Khamari:
This is an interesting question that has baffled philosophers for years. Here are my thoughts to assist you:
1. The first step is knowing where you want to be in life. Can you describe it to yourself in a simple paragraph? Take the time and write it
down.
2. Create a plan to get you there. Planning is important to your success. I like the quote that says, “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.”
So, get your plan written down so you can reference it and follow it.
3. Allow yourself to learn and grow with your plan. You plan must evolve and you will add and delete items as you continue your journey.
4. Read, find books that inspire you and help you get to where you want to be in life.
5. Manage your time. If you don’t manage your time and schedule out what you want to accomplish everyday, time will slip away and is too
easily lost on video games and TiKTok.
Five steps are my advice to you Khamari to live the life you want. Good luck and I wish you will on your journey.

Liana’s Answer

Hi Khamari. I think the most important thing in order to be successful is to define success for yourself. Often times people go through the motions of things because they think it is what they "should be doing" but in doing that sometimes you lose motivation and passion for things which is a key component of success. I would recommend that you try to set personal goals for yourself in everything you do regardless of what is asked of you, that way you define success for yourself and reach goals that you can be proud of.

Eamon’s Answer

Working hard is one important component. Another is being resilient. There will be obstacles and setbacks along the path to achieving anything, and it is important that you remain positive and continue working hard to achieve the goals that you have set even in the face of challenges.

Nicole’s Answer

Work hard and always listen/watch for opportunities. Knowing what you want and what your interests are will always help you with going after your goals. Remember success is always defined differently by each so set goals around what success is to you.

Jennifer’s Answer

There are several career resources available to you. You could talk to a career counselor at school and ask to take a few career assessment tools such as the Myers Briggs. This tool will help you learn about yourself and where you may enjoy working. Libraries a also a good resource for career tools. The bottom line is to follow your passion and you will be successful!

Mark’s Answer

Hey Khamari!

Folks have described this a bit, but one of the most important things you can do is to identify what's important to you. Like literally, write it out. Debbie Millman is an extraordinary thinker in this space. She has a few really fun and entertaining podcasts that describe an approach for writing out a 10 year plan. You can read more about it here: https://mindfulambition.net/vision-setting-debbie-millman-remarkable-life-exercise/

The power in the exercise is that it forces you to visualize what you actually want. That's often the hardest part of life. Once you know what you want, your life will more naturally orient itself towards achieving it. That's where everything else comes into play: working hard, building good habits, etc..

Best of luck, Khamari. The fact that you're asking this question means you're well on your way.

Savita’s Answer

The three things that helped me have a successful career are

Good Grades - help with the first job and getting your foot in the door.
Discipline - keep reaching out for what you want and never give up hope.
Good Attitude- there will always be ups and downs in any career and facing them with a good attitude always pays out.

Savita recommends the following next steps:

Do an aptitude and interest tests. Careers that match both your aptitude and interest are the ones that you will be most successful in.
Try to shadow people with different careers to see what interests you the most.

Very good question!Eventhough I do not have the life experience to answer this yet, I believe one should assess their belief of what they want to be in life continuously..often our idea of the perfect life might not be perfect at all and it takes time for us to understand that.If u have any idea or goal make sure to act towards it rather than spending too much time obsessing about it, tiny steps towards our goal in the real life is far better than major leaps towards it in our mind.

Julie’s Answer

Hi Khamari,
What a great question. I liked Liana's answer when she said people sometimes do things because of what they think they should be doing. I read Michelle Obama's biography over the summer which referenced that she fell into this trap and at one point realised she had chosen to be a lawyer because she liked the feeling of admiration she got as a child when other people were impressed with her dream. She realised much later that it was about doing things that made her happy. Her book is well worth a read and is full of inspiring quotes: here's 2 more I love: "Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude." and "Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own."
So what do you want your story to be?!
I think one of the key points in your question on what are the secrets behind getting to where you want to be in life is that it is very personal to you and it is multi-dimensional - often a blend of career, friends & family, health & wellbeing and doing some good/leaving a positive footprint. So, think about what you want to do and where you want to be in 10 or 20 years, and work hard to get there but make sure you enjoy the journey! Push your comfort zone and try new things, be kind to yourself and be kind to others. Work hard and have an open mindset, curious and learning.
Enjoy your journey!

Gloria’s Answer

I would say that the habit that has helped me most to succeed is to always be learning. The world is changing quite quickly and no field is immune to constant change. Change is a competitive advantage. I would argue that you should think of change as "improvement". Change gets a negative wrap. Your challenge will be this - are you going to be in control of when you have to change or are you just going to react to the change? Reacting can be stressful, especially since it normally comes too late. When you go into everything with an expectation that you are going to need to learn something new, you are not surprised by change, but excited by it. And if you are always learning, then when the big changes happen, you already have that learning muscle at full strength. I have seen too many people wait too long to make a change. At best, the change is stressful, at worst, they have lost their job to someone with more knowledge and willingness to change.
