[closed] What is a good way to become a model, leader-like employee in management?

Hello,
I am a college senior, and I am interested in business, but more specifically, management. I have been led to think that I need to become a model like employee who goes up and beyond for others. Not only will this show up as good on someone's character, but it will also allow someone to succeed, become a better asset for a company, and be a mentor for others. What is a good technique for someone to become a leader?

Thanks. #business #leadership #job-coaching #lifestyle

Good question Aimee! Leadership is about being less self centered and being more self directed, giving, thoughtful, authentic, trustworthy and self aware. Leadership isn't as much about technique as it is about being genuine.

get the issue of Fast Company that has airnb on the front. it has 40 or so leaders telling how to become a leader.
Having been a leader for over 40 years, my suggestions:
Listen more than you talk
Always keep confidentiality
Never yell, scream, or overreact to anything or anyone
Be there in the morning to greet everyone; be there at night to say good evening
Keep focused on the ultimate goals
Let your people make as many daily decisions as possible; empower them

There will always be three kinds of managers in your life. The kind that drives you forward through fear, the kind that is apathetic and has no influence on you at all, and the kind that inspires you to do better for yourself. The first kind is a boss. He threatens to write you up or fire you to drive better work ethic. The second kind is position holder. He doesn't get in your way, but he doesn't help you either. The third kind is a leader. He expects you to work hard because he works hard. He believes in you and drives you forward by helping you and protecting you until you can stand on your own two feet. You always want to be #3. A boss brings misery, and drives good employees to seek other employment while driving morale into the ground. The leader is the one who makes you WANT to be better and work harder.

To be a good manager, you need to stop asking a certain type of question, and start asking yourself a different kind of question.

Stop asking:
What can I do to make him work harder?

Start asking:
What problems exist that hinder my employee from being as productive as he could be.

You must stop asking yourself what to do to force good behavior, but believe in your team and encourage them. Lead from the front. If they see you working hard, they'll want to work hard themselves. If you only put down face book long enough to yell at them to get back to work, they will never respect you.

There is a perception that a good manager must be older than those they manage with years of experience. The best thing you can do is seek out leadership roles now. Do you play a sport? Become the encourager on that team. Try to be a squad leader or a team captain. Seek out leadership opportunities, and take this time to practice leading from the front and encouraging and enabling others. Always remember, If you find yourself threatening or yelling, you've already lost the battle.

Thank you comment icon Jason provided a very good description of leadership. I just would like to add that to become a good leader, you (as anybody) have to start working from the bottom and demonstrate that can climb up in your work finding and solving problems and learning to become a good team player. Once you understand and learn that leaders are self-made with passion, discipline and humanity, you are prepared to be a real good leader that everybody respect. Starting from the top being a leader, you will never be a real leader. Pablo Moreno

Great leaders are successful by demonstrating caring for the people that work for them. As a budding leader, you can demonstrate caring for your co-workers and organization by always being willing to work hard, go the extra mile to take on new assignments and supporting the team, all to benefit the team, not yourself.

The key for me is to understand that you can be a leader even if you are not in a leadership position. I agree with what the other guys have been saying and want to add this. Leadership is about recognizing that the people you lead have the 'on-the-job' knowledge, so listen to them and leverage their knowledge. Be self-aware of the language you use. Make it about we and us and not them and they or I. Encourage this in the people you lead. Value diversity and healthy conflict. If there is no conflict or disagreement, there is no innovation. Lastly I want to quote John Maxwell 'People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care'. People are a valuable asset.
