JoAnn’s Answer

Hi Vijayakumar - provided you meet any physical, educational or background requirements of the police force, I would assume its 'possible'. Whether it's 'easy' would depend on your definition of easy. They're very two distinct fields and are quite divergent in their work environment. I would suggest doing some soul-searching as to why you desire such a change in career and if you're interests and motivations truly lie in law enforcement, I would suggest reaching out to anyone you know in that field and confirming your assessments of what that line of work entails. Or seeing if there is a civilian role within the department to get a feel for it without a full commitment. At least with engineering, you have an appreciation for dicipline, rules, and standards and would have a pragmatic approach to solving problems. These can be attributable to police work as well. Best of luck!

Thank you comment icon (Part 1) Hi Vijayakumar, I completely agree with JoAnn's response. I was a police officer in the US Army for a few years and just want to provide some insight into a couple of things that you need to take into consideration if you intend to switch to this career field. Know that being a police officer, like JoAnn said, is physically demanding. There are many prerequisites, just like engineering, but they are mostly physically demanding such as the police academy and training. Regardless if you want to work as an administrator for a police force or as a patrol officer, you will have to complete many physical/technical gates with lots of training on weapons and equipment and tactics. Thank you comment icon (Part 2) Another factor to take into consideration, as an engineer, you usually have a predictable work cycle - 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. As a police officer, the schedule is much more fluid, longer shifts, weekends, nights, holidays, etc. Police officers are apart of emergency services which are never closed to the public and always operating to serve. It can become quite taxing on your personal life and scheduling around family and personal time/vacation. Either way, it is completely doable, but it requires a significant lifestyle change. More than willing to help if you have more questions about police work. Best of luck! Courtney Bone

Well I would say you can definitely give a try if your very interested and passionate about getting into civil service and and since you already have engineering skills in hand with you, I would say its a safe risk to try for civil service said that - I want you to analyze few questions: as to why you feel like switching from engineering to Police ? What is your goal ? Think through your short term and long term goals.
Once your clear with the above 2 questions please go ahead and give a try but be honest to yourself and think wisely when your answering those questions to yourself. All the very best!! and Happy learning - :)
