Hi, understand sometimes it may not easy to open up conversation with someone who you are not familiar with. Perhaps you can start with a smile and greetings first , e.g. Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Bye, etc. with people around you like your neighbour, classmates, etc. This is a warm up and let you get familiar with these people.
Sometimes, other may start open up some conversation with you. Try to be open minded and start some small talks with them. This is a good opportunities to practice. You will find more confidence to yourself and get use to talk to other people.
You have to have more self confidence to yourself and open minded.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Smangaliso,
Great question. I find that often people around you will be understanding and nice once you get to know them. People in general sometime have a tendency (myself included) to fill in during long pauses as silence is often awkward. For folks who stammer/stutter or are non-native speakers - they may need a little extra time to to speak. This is not a reflection on their intelligence and in fact they often have great ideas because they take the time to formulate thoughtful responses.
If this describes you, here's some suggestions.
1. If you have speech impediment , let the other person know before starting a conversation. Somethings along the lines of "hey, just you know I may speak slowly as I have a speech impediment. Hope you don't mind being patient with me". This will allow the other speaker to consider your needs and be more empathetic.
2. If you're shy, that's ok! It often takes time to get comfortable in an environment. Try finding a buddy or someone in your workplace you feel comfortable talking to 1:1. And slowly start talking to more people. Often chatting over lunch or coffee is great way to talk to people in smaller setting and feel more comfortable.
3. In a work environment, your work ethic and quality of work will speak volumes about you. Being dependable, consistent, and good a hard worker are things your coworker will appreciate respect you for. This can be developed by doing the little things well like respond in timely manners to emails or requests.
Finally, be comfortable being yourself. It's normal and ok to be shy.

My dear, you must first know that you are distinct, and different, these are strengths, you can use them to your advantage, smile and try to create a lot of fun, express yourself comfortably, never close, the most important thing is the mind, look at the physicist Stephen Hawken You will know that everything is possible, do not be shy, trust yourself, and say daily, I am distinguished, I am distinguished, and yes, I see you distinguished, greetings my friend
