Derek’s Answer

Caleb,

This is a desired career path for many. Sports is the best. And coaching athletes brings a ton of joy to your life. I have coached both high school and college football and volleyball athletes and it does not come without it's struggles.

First off, I want you to think of the best coaches in the world and tell me what degree they have. I'll wait....

You can't tell me their degree, I'm sure, but I bet you can tell me why they are the best coaches? How long have they been coaching? What is their win/loss record in playoffs? What do they specialize in? Why do college recruits pick their teams? All of these questions are answered because of the experience the coach has in coaching. A degree does not get you into coaching. Experience does.

Get a degree in whatever you want, but get started in a program as soon as possible. All coaches start by coaching either at a high school or a junior college in any capacity. Your networking of coaches and players will help you move long your way. If you coach at a junior college, you may get some tuition reimbursement! Hurray! Now get back to coaching. Your experience in the coaching field will get you to where you want to go. You will begin to meet better coaches and take opportunities with them. You will get recommendations from them as you pursue other programs. Stay in touch, as you never know what happens in the future.

As for the life of a coach, be prepared to give up some pleasures and time in your life. If you want to be good, you better be willing to give up time. I had to leave because I didn't want to give up time away from my children and wife anymore. Just too much for me. But if you are young and want to get after it, best way to start is start talking to programs around you.

Best of luck!
