Once you chose to be in this field, were there times that you wanted to turn back? Since nursing is usually a field that you can't take back

If I go to college not knowing what I want to do and I might want to do nursing I don't want to be stuck in a pothole. #nursing #registered-nurses #nurse-practitioner #nursing-education #nurse-midwife

I personally have known I wanted to be a nurse since I was 5 years old, so no. Even though there were many times where I felt overwhelmed and stressed, I never wanted to change my choice. It is not the type of profession you go into for the glory though, it can be emotional, tough, stressful, and is always a lot of work, but in my opinion totally worth it. I would recommend an internship or volunteer work in a hospital to get a feel for it before you dive in if you don't know a lot about it. You can always change your major or career at any time, but if you choose to, you may have to take different core classes and start from scratch, but nothing is ever completely undoable if you decide it is not for you. I have several friends who changed from nursing to Criminal Justice, psychology, sociology, physical therapy, etc. when they decided it just wasn't what they were looking for. No matter what you ultimately decide, you WILL have moments in any career where you feel overwhelmed, especially during school. Stick it through, make changes if you need to, and do your best. It will fall into place if you work hard and trust your gut!

Thank you, Stephani. This was really helpful and I like the little quote you had at the end of your response. Now I know it's all about what I want to do, from the heart. Thanks.

Nursing is a profession in which there are many alternative specialty and practice choices. Do you want to do patient care in a hospital? Do you want to work in a doctor's office? Do you want to work with adults? Do you want to work with children? Do you want to do research? Do you want to teach? As you're gaining your nursing education experience you will probably begin to find what interest you in the field of nursing or at least narrow down your interests a little. Fortunately nursing is a profession that covers a vast area of practices and allows you to 'work your way' into an area where you can flourish.

Best of luck in your search!

Hi Gilda!

The most important thing that you can do is to get to know yourself and the career area before you make a commitment, as this will lessen the possibility of you becoming uninterested in your choice. Preparing and researching your route will enhance your chances for having a satisfying and enjoyable career.
