Below are the high level requirements needed to be a software engineer

Collaborate with management, departments and customers to identify end-user requirements and specifications
Design algorithms and flowcharts to create new software programs and systems
Produce efficient and performant code based on requirements
Test and deploy programs and applications
Troubleshoot, debug, maintain and improve existing software
Gather and assess user feedback to improve software performance
Develop technical documentation to guide future software development projects

As your interest is in Software, You can pursue courses on your areas of interest - programming, analytics, security, mobile development, AI etc. You would definitely want to also focus your skill improvement in your areas of interest and look at oppty's which can make you get some project experience while you continue your normal education.

Hi Naved,

To follow a career in software engineering, in the United States, you need to get at least a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science. I believe European countries will require some similar degree which require between 2 and 4 years to get depending on the number of hours per day/week/year.
Higher degrees give you higher opportunities but the minimum is really that Bachelor degree.
