What can you do for your resume to show experience?

Especially going into the computer science field I believe experience is key to be hired. What are some things I can do to gain more experience to strengthen my resume other than taking courses or doing internships?

Hey Iakov

Leverage online coding platforms, where you can create your profile, and earn tech ratings as you learn, explore, and create, based on interest area.
Social coding is also a great way to learn in the process.

It is pretty much like fitness.
You will need to work at it constantly.
But, it is more readily acknowledged these days - that resumes.

Taylor’s Answer

Opportunities to show your teamwork skills are really important. Hackathons or volunteer work are great ways to show your passion for programming and that you work well with groups. That type of stuff is also often asked about in interview as well, so having experiences to talk about is really helpful.

These are great suggestions given already from the other members. I would also recommend once you've prepared your resume with the courses and possible internships, volunteering and coding, you can start applying the entry level technology or computer job openings on company websites. A lot of companies have early talent programs or are looking for entry level associates they can train for their organization. Then you will have work experience you can add to your resume. Wishing you the best~

Ami’s Answer

I love the suggestions so far. I would add that once you have learned to code you can create your own project - it can be something simple like a website or an app for yourself, a local nonprofit/business that you really love. It will show initiative and give you something to show potential employers as well as a part of your portfolio.

Aside from academic coursework and internship, I would consider looking into virtual/in-person networking groups that are related in your field. Perhaps you can volunteer to help your network of friends, family, or community with IT-related work. Are there local computer repair stores nearby where you can volunteer your time?
