What is the average pay for a computer programmer in Texas?

Lets say I just got out of college and I'm looking for a job related to computer programming what is the pay looking like ? #computer #programming #computer-software

Thank you comment icon It's hard to give an exact answer for a question like this. There are so many factors like the current job market, country and city you live in, and the exact computer programming specialty you're interested in (for example, you'll have different job and pay opportunities if you have a doctorate over a bachelor's degree). I would suggest using a site like Glassdoor (https://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm). Sites like Glassdoor are basically an anonymous form of social media for professionals to discuss salaries and the workplace environment. I would also recommend trying to do a job shadow with someone who works in the field, this would be the best way to learn more about the career. John Rooney

Hi Ruben - a computer programmer salary is going to vary a LOT depending on the exact circumstances (what your major was, which company you'd be working for, how much experience you have, what the exact position is, what part of TX you're in, etc); you will also find big differences in how pay is structured. For example: my first Software Engineer job out of college, working for a large defense contractor, had a salary and a ~6% bonus (+/- company performance) per year. Working for Google now, my compensation is roughly 50% salary and 50% bonus + equity(stock). Smaller companies like startups might give a significant portion of your compensation in equity (which can be a good or a bad thing depending on if their equity has any value before you leave).

According to salary.com (https://www.salary.com/research/salary/posting/entry-level-programmer-salary/tx) the median entry level salary in TX is ~83k, with most people earning 73-94k, which sounds roughly correct to me. I recommend looking online for specific companies you're interested in; sites like Glassdoor collect salary information and it's searchable by location + by employer, which gives you a much better feel. Find a few companies that hire computer programmers near where you'd want to work, and look them up to see more exact figures!

Hi Ruben,

While choosing the career path, this is one of the top question that pops up into everyone's mind! "How much will I earn?" In general, within USA compensation for technology related job mostly depends on key parameters such as - Area of Expertise, Years of Experience, Industry/Domain, and Location. For an example salary for all below combinations would be different -
1. A computer programmer in Java with 2 years of experience for job in Tech. Company in Austin, Texas
2. A computer programmer in Java with 2 years of experience for job in Health Company in El Paso, Texas
3. A computer programmer in Python with 2 years of experience for job in Tech. Company in Austin, Texas
4. A computer programmer in Python with 2 years of experience for job in Finance Company in El Paso, Texas

The Location does make a big difference but considering living expenses in that location it tallies out (i.e., in-hand salary would be similar) also Tax makes a difference per state. That said, I have seen various range of salaries based on above parameters starting 30K onwards for an Entry Level position. Hope it helps! Good luck.

Hi Ruben! This is probably not the most straightforward answer you were expecting but it really depends on various factors: the sector of the industry you're in (i.e. Java, web development, software, etc.), your location, etc. El Paso, TX is usually under the average for the state of TX as a whole so, if I were to ballpark it to a general "number", I'd probably say El Paso is around the 50-60k range for an entry level position. One huge benefit of the current environment in which employers are hiring is that you could also easily still be in El Paso but get a remote position that pays a salary more commensurate to the region where the employer is located. That's also another option.

Keep in mind that salary (in terms of base compensation) is also not all that matters in regard to "compensation". There can also be huge variances with actual pay structure (like salary, bonuses, stock purchases, etc.) and with benefits like 401k matching and health insurance coverage.
