The best way to stand out is to build experience by starting out small, this can be doing a internship or getting a job school job that help build up your skills in game design, it also help building connections with your classmates and professor as recommendations from people who have experience in the gaming industry or work at the company your applying can go a long way. But if all else fails just create games and upload it onto sites like itch.io and use what people said about your games in order for you to improve or boost your resume.

Jill’s Answer

There are generally two ways for game designers to start. One is by going to school. There are a number of game design programs at both traditional universities and specialized schools. Some focus more on the technical aspects of the role and are like specialized computer science degrees. Some focus more on the storytelling aspect of game design. Many of these programs can also lead to internships at larger game companies.

The other is to jump in and start making a game yourself! There are a lot of tutorials online for the larger game engines like Unreal (https://www.unrealengine.com/learn) or Unity (https://unity.com/learn). You can even jump into a lower-code option like Minecraft, Roblox, or Scratch and start making your own game. You can also find a number of books and YouTube videos on the subject.
