I have met so many goals in my career that it is hard to list them all. The most important is that I am happy, and have a loving relationship with my wife of 45 years, four wonderful children, and five grandchildren. I won't go into the steps that lead to this wonderful life - it certainly was not all my doing. I think all of my accomplishments have been the direct result of doing the next right thing, day after day. In my 41 years of active and reserve service in the Navy, I was promoted to Chief Petty Officer, earned a Direct Commission, and retired as a Captain after five tours as Commanding Officer. After earning my Master of Engineering degree, I worked for US EPA for twelve years during which time I designed and build an air monitoring network for the Southeastern States and used that work to complete my Master's Thesis. I also earned my engineer's license (PE), and Board Certification as a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (DEE) and my Master of Business Administration degree. I went into private practice in 1988 and built a successful business providing engineering services to manufacturing clients and forensic engineering services to attorneys and insurance companies. I studied and became a Board Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and Board Certified Safety Engineer/Professional (CSP). I am also a Diplomate of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers (DFE). Two weeks ago I graduated again, this time with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. At 74, I love the work, and the opportunity to expand myself every day, and am happy joyous, and free.

I don't look too far into the future. When I was much younger, I would review what I wanted to accomplish next year. I broke it down into daily, short term and long-range goals. When I satisfied most of the daily goals, the rest fell into place. I currently have a paper in peer review for publication in a professional journal. I started taking one course at a time about four years ago because college is free at my age. And it led to my MSME. I was doing the next right thing. I have no idea what my next goal will be and may not until it is realized. Good luck.

Having reached the position of Chairman of The Board and CEO of several global high technology businesses, means little without consistently being positioned to add significant value to my extended family, to my community and to my country. These are the goals, at a young age, I established for myself.
To excel in being the best husband, provider and protector one can be. To be the best teacher and role model for my children and now grandchildren.
To volunteer, assist and provide leadership to and within various non profits and governmental agencies I believe are consistent with my values.
To support my country, through service as an officer in the Army as well as financially and personally supporting candidates I trust. And, importantly, to vote.
Of greatest value, once i have accepted responsibility for something; I will with every fibre of mind and body over achieve the goals or targets set before me.
As to personal values, my goals are to always be honest, transparent, ethical, moral and accountable.
In business, it may be more difficult than one should think to adhere to these personal values/goals. If you do, in your lifetime, you will succeed in every aspect of your life.

I share with you that I don't think that I have finished accomplishing my goals...even in those cases where I am proud of my results. One of the many things I am proud of is my ability to meet the needs of my clients. I have been working in the field of data and data analytics for many, many years. I have also held the role of network engineer for many years. In both instances, my clients and their needs have been very different. Even in those different working environments, I am proud that I have figured out ways to meet their needs in such a way that my contribution has allowed my clients to achieve their business goals.
The biggest step I took toward completing this particular goal is listening...first...then acting on what I hear, see and learn from my clients. It can be a mistake to assume that, because of one's knowledge set, that they know more than their client does about what is needed and how to go about it.
Obstacles...many... but one of the biggest can be working with clients or on a project that doesn't have clear direction and not being able to advise on a direction when one isn't put forth. Time (or time wasted) can be a tremendous obstacle to completing tasks necessary for business and team success.
In the cases where clients were happy and outcomes were positive, in my view, the only way to describe that feeling is fulfilling. It has been my experience that the more time and effort that is put into creating successful outcomes, the more fulfilling that reward can be when successful outcomes are achieved. Beyond that feeling of achievement, others recognize success and will be interested in partnering and learning to increase their chances of success. This can become a positive snowball effect that helps you and others grow both personally and professionally.
