Does hurt your eyes if you gaze at the sun?

I looked directly at the sun when I was younger, and was told that it would be harmful. I'm interested in optometry, and would like to know why it is bad for me to do so.

Yes, it does, the UV light might damage your eyes. If you want to see the sun with the naked eyes, look at it at early morning when the sun is farthest from you, the ozone layer and obstruction along the way will help to reduce the intensity of the sun light. And the most important is looking only for a few seconds.
Thank you comment icon Do not look at the sun without appropriate protection (ie solar eclipse glasses) due to not only to the UV (which has long term, cumulative damaging effects) but mostly due to the almost immediately damaging affects intense visible light exposure. Solar retinopathy is a serious, permanent, blinding condition that can occur from just a few seconds of sun gazing, even with UV protection. see: http://eyewiki.aao.org/Solar_Retinopathy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_retinopathy https://www.livescience.com/20433-solar-eclipse-blind.html https://www.retinalphysician.com/issues/2013/october-2013/solar-retinopathy-etiology,-diagnosis,-and-treatm http://bjo.bmj.com/content/bjophthalmol/53/8/534.full.pdf Jared Cox
