Note: I am not a paternity lawyer, but I see you asked this question about 2 weeks ago and it has not been answered yet, so this is just my effort to be helpful.

I would imagine most any field in law is complex, and from what I can tell, it seems like it could take about 7 years to become one. This is what I found online...

Qualifications of a Paternity Lawyer: The process of becoming a paternity lawyer is similar to that of any other lawyer. Here is what is needed to become a paternity lawyer;

A bachelor’s of law degree: You will need to have a bachelor’s degree in law to become a paternity lawyer. The degree will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge required to be a successful paternity lawyer. It will take you about four years to complete a bachelor’s degree in law. You must do this from an accredited law school.

A license to practice law: This is achieved through training that is completed over about three years. The first year is known as the articling year and involves working under the supervision of a senior lawyer. The next two years are the practical training period during which you will be required to take and pass the bar exam. The exams are administered by the provincial law societies.

Specialization in paternity law: You will need to specialize in paternity law to be a successful paternity lawyer. This is because paternity law is a complex and specialized area of the law. You will need to have a thorough understanding of the law to be able to advise and represent your clients effectively. Gain admission from the relevant state admission authority within 5 years of graduation. This is to ensure that your skills and knowledge are up to date. The next thing you need to do is apply for a Practising certificate from the local society. According to Legal Match, it helps in maintaining the standards and also regulates the legal profession. The application process may vary from one jurisdiction to another but you will need to meet all the requirements to be a successful paternity lawyer. You need to have good communication and interpersonal skills as you will be dealing with clients regularly. You should also be able to work independently and be self-motivated as you will be working on your own most of the time. You should have good research and writing skills as you will be required to prepare legal documents regularly. Last but not least, you should be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines as the job can be quite demanding at times. Once you become a paternity lawyer, you may choose to study for a Master of Law (LLM) in Paternity Law. This will help you to keep up to date with the latest developments in the law and also allow you to specialize in this area of the law. You can expect to earn a good salary as a paternity lawyer.

Generally speaking lawyers who handle family law or divorce cases may deal with issues about paternity. However, those lawyers would not refer to themselves as "paternity lawyers".

In order to become a lawyer, you would need to get a Bachelor's Degree from college then a law degree. Law school is 3 years but could probably be completed in a shorter time depending on the person and the school's course offerings. After you graduate law school and obtain a law degree, you would have to take a Bar Exam in the state where you would like to practice. Passing a state's Bar exam and meeting that state's other admissions requirements enables you to practice law in that state. You can practice in any area that you like but may choose to specialize or focus on just one area or several.

Most law schools will consider your grades from college and results from the law school admissions (LSAT) to determine whether to accept you into their school. The LSAT is a tough exam which requires preparation. After you complete law school, the Bar Exam is also not easy. However, with the right preparation and dedication, it is possible.

If you are very interested in law, you have to put in the time and take the steps needed. It is good that you are seeking information on what to expect. That is a good start.

Best of luck to you.
