what should i take in uni to become a travel nurse?

I want to be a travel nurse because it's a great way to explore different places and cultures while also helping people. Do I HAVE to take a bachelor of science in nursing or can I just take a bachelor of science to have my career options open in case I changed my mind in the future and if I do take BS what classes should I take? Also, how long would the schooling be if i took BS vs BSN and if anyone is a travel nurse and is answering this question...is it a good paying job?

Hi Jackie.

The minimum entry level for RN is Bachelors in Nursing . its is recommended and sometimes required to practice as RN for few years before travel nursing. The RN years of practice would allow you have foundation to go into any hospital to help. As travel nurse you get very minimal training as traveler as compared to regular staff because you are expected to have years of nursing skills already. Its a "travel to help position" travel nurse fill in hospital needs and start right away when sign a contract. its important to work as RN first for 2-3 years before you travel. As for pay it can great pay, your benefits wont be as good as RN employee. Can be something to check if they offer retirement when you reach that point.. Overall, travel pays well but sometimes don't offer some benefits but this depends what your personal needs are. .

Most travel companies would prefer that you have your BSN. There are no specific classes that you need to take you just do your BSN program in university. You do however need a minimum of one year experience and I would suggest to do your experience on a med surge floor as it is a floor that has a variety of things and makes it where you can float to any other specialty with ease When you are on assignment.

I would take BSN classes. A lot of travel agencies also require additional certifications depending on which unit you work. Travel nurses usually make good money.
