What is something that you found hard about being a business major

Thank you comment icon A few things I found hard being a business major was just learning all the different dynamics of a business. Within business, there are a lot of different subjects/concentrations to learn such as economics, marketing, accounting, law, etc. Having said that, taking so many classes that focus on all of those, it can be a bit tricky as to which one you may find the most joy in or want to pursue. Additionally there's also a decent amount of homework and projects that come along with it. It's not easy going down the path of business but if you're determined, focused, and put your mind to it, you can absolutely do it sarah

There are so many different types of business classes that you are likely to find you excel at some and others are a bit more challenging. Personally, I enjoyed the international marketing and economics courses. It helped me gain a broader perspective of the business world. The class that I found most difficult was my first Statistics class. I had not been truly exposed to statistics prior to this class. I studied very long and hard for my first quiz. The quiz was only worth 10 points but I was devastated when I scored a zero on that quiz. I leveraged the resources available to me, my professor and my teacher's assistant. They took the extra time that I needed to help get those basic concepts grounded. I was able to build upon those basic principles and after a lot of studying, I did score an A in that class. Most business schools require that you take the basic courses of all the disciplines. That will help you narrow down which ones you might want to pursue in your junior / senior years of school. Best of luck to you!

Bryanna recommends the following next steps:

Get involved with your school's business fraternity. The business fraternity's offer camaraderie and unique opportunities, including leadership opportunities.
Investigate and pursue business related internships during the summer

For me, there were some challenging courses at my university like Business-Law but it was honestly the class that I learned the most. So I would not be scared or nervous about challenging courses/things that are bound to come your way but look at everything with open expectations as it be a great learning experience. We also had some challenging projects where you had to work in large groups but that was preparing you for the real work life as there are many instances where you will need to work on a project with another colleague. Overall, my Business degree has been invaluable for me, as I would not be in my place in career without my BBA.

A business major can require much group work, which is good practice for project or cross-team work in the real world but can also be quite frustrating. Just like in the real workplace, you have to learn to work with and accept the schedules, perspectives, and inputs (or lack thereof) of others. Skills such as listening, facilitating, and motivating become important for group success.

Good question. Here are some things that were challenging about being a business major off the top of my head:
- Other majors looking down on you and thinking business was just an 'easy' major since it wasn't STEM
- Some classes were harder one semester depending on the professor who taught it (i.e. one semester of business statistics was easy while the next year everyone failed)
- Some people said you could always just go back to business school later to get your MBA and you could have had a different major instead

I found statistics difficult to grasp initially. I took the class over summer and dropped it after 2 weeks, then took it the following fall with focus and determination. I was surprised how I was able to overcome my fear of math and numbers. It ended up not being as difficult as I thought.

Many times it takes focus and determination to get through a difficult class or situation.

Julia’s Answer

Hey, Lexi!
Business is not a difficult major, although some classes may be more challenging than others. Like all majors, the challenges lie in individual strengths, weaknesses, and what you enjoy. For example, Accounting was not something I enjoyed. Not that it was difficult, but motivating myself to spend time on it was the challenge. Time management will be the real challenge of any major or job. You will have several hundred pages of reading a week, group projects, solo projects, and studying for tests in college. My advice would be to read up and perfect your time management skills. Remember, you got this! Best of Luck on your journey.
