what classes should i take in hs if I want to major in bio-med?

I'm currently a freshman taking all the basic classes. I want to become in a bio-med major, what are some good classes to take in hs to prepare myself?

Hello! It's a great question! Starting college can seem like you're being thrown into the deep end. I was a biomedical science student during my time as an undergraduate and my advice is to figure out what you might want to do with your degree and go from there! If you plan on going to a professional graduate school (medical school, vet school, Etc) I would find out what those schools require you to take and fill in your institution's courses around that. Once you have a career you can aim at things will become much easier. One thing that is certain is that you should try to find things and subjects you love and don't be afraid to be flexible if your interests change!

It's a tad redundant but talk to your guidance counselor. And I'm not sure how your school names its classes but go for any bio 1 and 2, Chem 1 and 2, medical math, physics 1 and 2, more in depth bio classes like anatomy and physiology, nutrition, first aid. May I also recommend phlebotomy? If you can give someone a needle and they don't panic you can get hired anywhere in medicine. I started out as one, then my current job took a risk, hired me as an ems driver, I got my EMT and I work for one of the highest paid emt companies in America!
This might be a curve ball but I recommend some Philosophy classes too, they did a study and found Philosophy majors and minors tend to do better in their post bachelor studies

I hate to sound like a typical teacher and say everything is important! Science classes are good specific preparation, but you'll need good communication skills (English), and math skills. Even arts can helpful: if you're interested in medicine and interacting with patients and staff, sharing common interests like music can be useful, or drama to convey the right message you intend.

From a science standpoint, I'm going to say that one of the most important classes is chemistry. Having a good grasp on chemical interactions and processes can help a lot with advanced biology, and all of the chemistry necessary for bio in college. Just to relate back to the earlier point, chemistry is also very math-intensive.

As others have said, go ahead pursue other interests and classes too. They will help to make you a well-rounded person, and you might find new interests or help clarify the ones you already have.
