Assuming you do not have financial hardship, one of the best things you can do is to volunteer to help those who badly needs help.
Help out any charitable organization such as Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank, Nursing Homes, or Homeless Shelters.
This will travel distance in your college applications.

I agree that volunteer work is great. Not only will you be able to bulk up your resume, but volunteering is a great way to network.
Choose something that interests you. I believe high schoolers are pressured to choose a career path at too young of an age.
Connect with a teacher or counselor you are comfortable with to see if there are any open opportunities for you.
