Barbra’s Answer

Hi! I was in private practice and also served as a General Counsel for a large corporation. While it was stressful, it was also very rewarding as you literally learn something new everyday and you are helping others. I was not bored at all! However, what many folks do not realize is that you do NOT have to stay in private practice or even in a corporate attorney job. Having a law degree allows you to have many different career options. (Note: A business person cannot be a lawyer but a lawyer can be a business person.) I currently serve as an Associate Director over Contract Management....my role is not technically a legal role, as it is not in the Legal Department. However, I am able to utilize my legal skills and experience in my role. Hope this helps!

Nicolene’s Answer

Hi Camila. There are so many different options for someone with a legal degree, it would be up to you to find an area that suits your interests and also your personality. Generally speaking, a career in law is demanding /high pressure so resilience is a must if you are choosing this field. Most jobs will have some tedious aspects to them but there is nothing stopping you from shifting gears to business or banking (for example) if you find legal practice is not for you.

As an example, I was in practice in a law firm and decided to shift to an in-house role as a Contract Manager which I find well suited to my personality type. I am a bit more introverted and enjoy contracts and commercial negotiations. You may be under or over stimulated in one particular field but if you have a keen interest and willingness to keep an open mind, you can shift around until you find a good fit.

I would suggest that you ask yourself what interests you about law or what your reasons are for wanting to pursue law as your career. If it is a genuine interest you will never be bored. Best of luck!
