Hi Diego,

If you're looking for a pathway into becoming a police officer but you'd like to start somewhere else, you might consider military service. Military police positions teach many of the same skills and hold many of the same responsibilities as civilian police officers, and military service is seen favorably by police departments when considering candidates. Talk to your local military recruiter to see if this path could be right for you.

All the best,
Corey

Hey there, to become a police officer you have to first take a civil service exam for whatever department you are looking to join. Usually you have to be a resident of the area. You should study hard for the initial exam, and make sure you are keeping yourself physically fit while you are waiting to enter the police academy. The reason I say this is because there are physical agility tests once you enter the police academy. Some departments may also require you to have an associates degree - but this is not true for all of them, so look at the one you plan to apply to and know the requirements. Some careers similar to a police officer

1) Corrections Officer - you work in the jail or prison. You basically make sure that the day runs smoothly for the inmates. You supervise them during their daily activities.

2) Park Ranger - Supervise the park, make sure there is nothing bad going on like arson, poaching of animals, vandalization.

Lots of law enforcement jobs have similar qualifications. Typically, you see the difference when you look at federal jobs. Federal jobs will require a four-year degree. If you're looking for similar jobs, you have County Sheriffs. That is one option. You could also be a Correctional Officer. Both would offer challenges and rewards in their own way.
