Jerry’s Answer

An apprentice is a worker that desires to achieve a journeyman status in any trade. To achieve a journeyman status you must be an apprentice for 3 to 6 years. You must be self motivated and take advantage of every opportunity you get to learn everything you can. An apprenticeship is not an easy task. You are scrutinized, observed, ridiculed, and required to proove your knowledge and worth as you go. You're subject to be cut out of the program at any moment if you can't learn and follow exact instructions. To work independently as an electrician you have to reach journeyman status. To achieve journeyman level, you will put in many more hours learning as you work. Than you would if you were going for a 4-5 year college degree. You will then be fully competent and have the ability to aquire answers to questions that you may encounter as a journeyman.

Dan’s Answer

I spent a few years in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers which is the dominant union for electricians. It is a five year apprenticeship and a very good career. The best path to getting an apprenticeship is to go here and begin looking into the requirements at your local union hall: https://ibewcco.org/apprenticeship/. There are some non union options too such as: https://www.neca.asn.au/content/apprenticeships-0. Apprenticeships are the best way to build a career as an electrician and get the required training to be successful. There is a lot of demand and not enough interest in the trades these days so going this route may be beneficial.
