As a veterinarian for almost 24 years, I can say that this is certainly a stable career choice! People will always continue to own pets and seek out veterinary care regardless of whatever else is happening in the country/world. Currently, there is a situation in the veterinary profession with the number of animals requiring veterinary care far outweighing the availability of veterinarians as well as other veterinary staff. Due to this, it's hard to say where the profession will be at in years to come though. It is a demanding profession for sure with many pros and cons. It's not just a love for animals that needs to prompt going into the profession....it ultimately is a people oriented profession as well! My best recommendation in deciding on a future in the field is to get some exposure to it first hand! Volunteer or shadow at your local clinics, look into job positions as a kennel assistant, etc. The best way to learn about the career is to at least see some of it up close "behind the scenes".

My thoughts:

Absolutely YES!
My husband and I both grew up on farms, and we currently have five animals. Vet bills are outrageous, and we can never get in to see one for weeks and weeks because they are always booked! There are not enough vets anywhere! And we've moved 13 times - we know about the great Vet shortage...and it's only getting worse. I keep telling my teen boys that this would be an amazing career. People everywhere are waking up to the fact that pets help calm us and relax our fight, flight or freeze systems. Everyone is buying a pet or starting a mini farm with small animals for enjoyment. They all need vets. Please go into this career if you love animals....we need you!!!!
