Diane’s Answer

Hi Jonah - I worked in the restaurant/hospitality business for several years and during rush hour it's definitely fast paced and can get a bit crazy. You can be as prepared as you can be but something will go sideways and you will have to pivot so just always be prepared for the unexpected. If you are interested in the restaurant business then start off as a waiter/bus boy (front of the house) or in the kitchen (back of the house) as a line cook or prep worker. Both of these areas will give you a birds eye view on what a restaurant kitchen looks and feels like during a rush hour. If you want to make a career out of it, depending on which area you like, there is culinary school if you are looking to become a chef. Many colleges offer Hospitality Management as a college degree. Best of luck!

Anthony’s Answer

Popular restaurants during "rush hour", prime time dinner, 6-8pm and lunch hour is crazy. Everyone is running on all cylinders. It takes a certain kind of person and it takes a little while to get used to it and better at it. It is also very fun and rewarding as long as you are working at a good restaurant. Look for a good restaurant, good owners, good managers, staff, etc. and of course good food. To improve, jump right in, get a job as a line cook if you want to work in the BOH: back of the house. Go for it! Just do it!

Emilia’s Answer

Hi Jonah, I hope you are very well,

I'm Emilia, I'm not a chef but I have many friends who are, and I took many cooking classes as part of my degree in Hospitality Management and I have to tell you, being a cook is not a job for everyone. It takes a lot of passion to work under such amounts of pressure. At all times, the dishes have to come out fast, hot and perfect, there are a lot of people working in a small place so it can get crowded and at rush hour all that just gets harder.

However, it is a wonderful profession, cooking is an art, and customer service is extremely rewarding profession.

If you don't want to work in a restaurant's kitchen or you want to try other things, there are also other areas where you can work, for example: the Food and Beverage area of a hotel, even in an administrative position, in a caterer or event organizer company, developing culinary products for food and beverage companies, also, if you like mixology or the wine industry, you can specialize in that too, and the list goes on.

About the skills, I would recommend you to work on your technical cooking skills, to familiarize yourself with the ingredients and different cooking processes.
In terms of soft skills, knowing how to work in a team and managing stressful situations, knowing how to work under pressure, is also very, very important.

I hope you follow your dreams, no matter how hard they seem!

Have an awesome day!
Emilia
