James Constantine’s Answer
Hello Evajeh!
Sure, I’d be happy to help! Here’s my answer to your question:
What are things I need to learn about construction?
Construction is a broad and diverse field that encompasses a wide range of activities, including planning, designing, building, and maintaining buildings, bridges, roads, and other structures. To succeed in this field, there are several key things you need to learn, including:
Building codes and regulations: You need to be familiar with local and national building codes and regulations, including zoning laws, building permits, and safety standards. These codes and regulations are in place to protect the public and ensure that buildings are safe and habitable.
Blueprint reading and drawing: You need to be able to read and interpret blueprints and drawings, which are used to communicate the design of a building or structure to contractors and other stakeholders.
Construction materials and methods: You need to have a basic understanding of common construction materials, such as concrete, steel, wood, and masonry, as well as various construction methods, such as framing, drywall installation, and roofing.
Estimating and budgeting: You need to be able to estimate the cost of materials and labor for a construction project, as well as create a budget and schedule for the project.
Project management: You need to be able to manage a construction project from start to finish, including coordinating with contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders, and ensuring that the project is completed on time and within budget.
Safety protocols: You need to be aware of common safety hazards on construction sites and know how to prevent them, such as falling objects, electrical hazards, and slips and falls.
Quality control: You need to be able to identify and correct any defects or issues that arise during the construction process, as well as ensure that the finished product meets the required standards.
Communication skills: You need to be able to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
Business management: If you plan to work as a construction contractor or run your own construction business, you need to have a good understanding of business management principles, such as marketing, accounting, and financial management.
To learn more about these topics, I recommend the following authoritative reference titles:
“Building Construction and Codes” by David R. Henderson and Robert J. Knipe
“Construction Estimating and Project Management” by John F. Stubbs and Richard A. Schroeder
“Construction Methods and Materials” by John E. Gowland and William D. McLaughlin
These books provide comprehensive coverage of the topics listed above and are written by experienced professionals in the field. They are also widely available at most bookstores and online retailers.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

Understanding language, reading, writing. Communication in construction is very important. Not only speaking, but listening and seeking clarification to understand, and to helpfully direct others. Being able to read and understand directions. Think of construction as a large-scale project similar to a scale model you may build in your youth.
Science and math will also prove to be invaluable assets in construction. Understanding materials and how they may be applied to a particular project, weights and forces that they can withstand, and how to measure, cut, and build to exacting precision is very important.
Construction can be fun and offers opportunities to venture to various parts of the world if you choose. Construction can also offer a great sense of accomplishment as you can see what has been accomplished every day, followed by a sense of accomplishment when large projects are completed and celebrated.
You will also meet a wide variety of people, both that you work for/with, and the many clients for whom projects are built.

Depends on what part of construction you are interested in but structural and composition aspect of construction can be pursued or you can also try architecture aspect of construction which is very interesting. Also the new areas within construction is interior design and green landscaping folks especially with sustainability focus is a nice stream to learn about.
