What extracurriculars should I participate in to make myself a better applicant as a junior in highschool?
Right now I am a junior in High School and my extracurriculars aren't the best but I want to go to a good college I think it would help if I strengthened my extracurriculars so I was wondering what extracurriculars I should try.

Below are my suggestions :
1. Join the extra curriculum activities you have interest
2. Try to join the organizing committee of the interest clubs to organize the event. This is valuable experience.
3. Join the Voluntary activities, e.g. Visiting elderly home, assist minorities or children from underprivileged families, etc.
4. Explore any opportunities that you can join some competition representing the school, e.g. Race, Music Competition, Speech Competition, etc.

Good question. You are not alone, so many of your peers feel the same way in their junior and senior years in HS. They all question the quality, rigor and volume of activities on their resumes and my response is to not go overboard. Keep it simple, authentic and meaningful.
First, please start by realizing that authenticity is key in your process. So focusing on what you are already doing and increasing it a bit more may go a long way. Admissions readers will know you didn’t just start that activity for the application process, for example.
However, if you have to start a new activity because you have a new found interest, then look for something that you care about deeply. For example, Knitting, writing stories for the elderly, singing in your religious organization, filmmaking with your new iPhone, etc. It may be a competition you are planning to participate in or a business venture that you started because you wanted to cut your neighbor’s lawn for example. Keep it simple but meaningful.
Whatever you decide to do keep it simple, authentic and meaningful to you. The communities we are serving need us to not check off a list but to serve them with our entire hearts.

Great question and one many students ask! Don't try to be a jack of all trades. Focus on a small number of things you are already interested in. Sports, clubs, volunteering, band, whatever. Also attempt to take AP or more challenging courses. You don't have to do this for everything but each one helps. Also helpful - dual enrollment at community college. Many courses are offered online. They are inexpensive, give you a taste for what to expect at university, and show demonstrated academic rigor, etc. so they look great on your applications. Good luck!

Extra curriculars are meant to showcase your strengths and qualities (academic, teamwork, discipline) to colleges. Here's a few to check out: Mock Trial Team, Yearbook, Theater/Drama Club or Choir, National Honor Society, Dance Teams (hip-hop, ballet, contemporary or whatever your school may offer), Volunteering clubs or volunteering on your own with individual non-profit organizations, Young Democrats and/or Republicans. My high school also offered clubs that were dedicated to specific causes for example we had a Social Justice Club tied to social justice initiatives within the community and an LGBTQ Alliance committed to providing services to at-risk LGBTQ youth. The best place to start is maybe making a list of all your possible interests and then finding out which extracurricular activities speak to those. I hope this helps some and best of luck!
