Diane’s Answer

When you are getting a job out of college one of the most important things you can do is to demonstrate your ability to learn, show how you use logic and be willing to be wrong. No matter what you study and major in as an undergraduate, no one will expect you to have real-life experience because you've been a student! What they will want to know is if you are eager, low-ego and willing to learn. Your question on what you can do with communications is, you can do a lot - it is a very broad field that touches every aspect of corporates, sports, politics and more. Narrowing down your field of study and picking a minor as you progress in college are important, as is getting internships and networking. These steps will help you get a full time job and that applies to any major. Like anything- it's not about the outcome, it's about the journey. What do you like to do now when you're enjoying yourself and happy? There's probably an area of communications in your joy that you could pursue!

Eileen’s Answer

Anything you want - EVERYTHING is telling a story. The above advice is great but never limit yourself. Yes, fields with the primary task being writing are a great first start.....technical writing =- including law, advertising, web copy with html coding (why not)....business writing - think annual reports and financial statements. Everything needs to be communicated, so do not be daunted.

Julie’s Answer

Hi and Communication has numerous concentrations' (even Technical), so researching that topic will help with ideas for careers. Also talk to a counselor if you are in high school or college in Comm department. Searching on LinkedIn is a good idea as suggested farther above. And remember, if you are interested in a business or corporate career, that is the path I stayed in after I got my Communication with a concentration in Print (that was back in the 90's!) while working full-time. I decided to stay in my corporate career because of pay, benefits, was good at it, etc., and I found my communication skills really helped me daily with crafting/responding to emails, writing business documents, speaking on conference calls, verbally asking questions/giving answers, etc. Best wishes and I really liked when someone above stated to think about what you enjoy doing now and makes you happy...how would a Communication degree fit into that or the other way around!

Hi Faith!
Wow, you have a whole world of possibilities with that degree! I would go to Linkin and search jobs hiring and they have a specific spot where you can put in what schooling or education you have. It will give you hundreds of job opportunities in your area!
You can go into political analysis, teaching, social media, counseling, etc. I guess it depends on what specific communications you are majoring in. Kind of similar to law, which you can get a really great career going with a certificate and a com degree. Good luck and I hope this helped!

Hello Faith!

In Communications, there's many fields including public relations (PR), marketing, technical writing, and journalism.
Even within these fields, there's sub-fields!

Sports journalism, Business journalism, Entertainment/Celebrity journalism, Photojournalism

- Technical Writing:
Medicine, Technology, or Engineering, where you may write Manuals, Articles, or Reports.

- PR:
Work in Public Affairs/Government, Investor Relations, Media Relations (for News or Broadcasting), or Crisis communication

- Marketing:
So many areas here. People often split it between Traditional and Digital. See these links:
