What careers could I pursue that include traveling to different countries?

I am currently a Sophmore in Highschool. Through my school I am in an internship program that not only gives us opportunities but pushes us the students to figure out what they want to do for the future and how. Personally, finding a career in another nation is something I am very interested in. #career #travel #international #future

Hey Aiden, I'm glad to see that you are planning for the future, and that those plans include travel. I believe that when it comes to travel, working, and formal education that I have learned most things that are relevant to my world view, beliefs, morals etc, from travel. I saw that Joe Cronin mentioned that teaching English in a foreign country is a good option and I wholeheartedly agree. A teaching English certification (TEFL, ITTT, TESOL etc.) can be acquired online and for a low fee (anywhere from 200-600$) Though the price and quality of individual courses vary the certification generally lasts a life time and applies to any foreign country. A common misconception is that one needs to devote years at a time to teaching English or that they must speak the local language at least at a beginner level. Neither of these misconceptions are true. I was able to obtain my TEFL online in a matter of months while working a full time job and taking two classes at a time through my university. That info is not meant to praise myself, but simply to illustrate how easy these certifications can be to obtain. Having a certification definitely ease's the trial of finding work teaching English and if having a certification, many schools do not require any college degrees, or related teaching experience. Some of the teaching positions are paid, and some are voluntary (though still provide room and board.) It is a great way to experience another culture, and even to integrate into that culture based on how long you choose to stay in country. By working in the other country, it is also easy to network and pursue even completely unrelated forms of work.

I obtained my certification via https://www.teflonline.net/ but if you ever choose to teach in the future I recommend you research the program yourself to see if it bears the level of experience you wish to obtain. It's motivating for me to see that other young people desire to travel and experience new locations and cultures. I hope that you are able to do just that!

Thank you comment icon Thank you very much, I hadn't thought about teaching English. That is extremely interesting to me now. I will definitly look into getting that certificate, possibly during the summer. Furthermore, I am an intermediate Spanish speaker as well. I am glad I could motivate you, it has always been my dream to travel and experience the essence of life. I do have a question for you. What is it like working for the Air Force? Do you travel too? I also have an interest for flying and getting my pilot licence and maybe that would be the way I could travel. Aiden
Thank you comment icon The military can definitely be a means of travel. Like all military branches, the Air Force has jobs ranging from pilot, to cook, to mechanic, to security officer, and more. In 5 years in the Air Force I was able to travel to 15+countries and 10+ states in America for work (and many more in my time off). However, there have been situations where individuals were stuck at one base for multiple years at a time. So unfortunately, a military member is really not in control of where they travel, though they can volunteer for certain opportunities. So basically, I was fortunate to have the travel opportunities I had in the Air Force, but there is no guarantee that anyone who joined would have the same experience. Thomas O'Dell

Great question.Teaching English abroad is one option. Getting a job in the travel industry is another great way to learn about traveling, help others and go on some great trips for discounted rates - or even free. Working in the study abroad industry (at a university or program provide like EF) is another option. If you want to travel to different locations and work, we just posted an article about ways to get paid to travel:

There are also increasing opportunities to work from home. In many cases, your home can be wherever you want to be.

Thank you comment icon Flight attendant is another option. Geomatics Engineering offers a lot of opportunities, as well as nursing. Andrea Power

  1. Management Consultant: Often they are assigned to projects around the world that can involve travel.

  2. NGO (Non-Government Organization): Charities, non-profits, etc. Many include operations in multiple countries.

  3. Volunteer: Not as a career, but as a way to travel while maintaining a domestic career. Doctors without Borders, Engineers without Borders, etc.

  4. Finance and banking: Many banks are international and move their employees around the world between offices.

I'm sure others will chime in with more ideas.

Interesting question! My husband is a CPA, he's lived and worked in six countries. I would say, based on my experience, become a journalist. Travel the world and write about your firsthand experiences to enrich others as they discover your work. Many times, I've been once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. It's a worthwhile pursuit.

I found several great opportunities for travel international travel for you to have a look at. Some of these choices do begin with a Flight Attendant for multiple airlines or a pilot of an air plane, , The travel and tourism, industry, has a great base with emphasis on hospitality on a cruise ship. Many jobs are available on cruise lines that go from port to ports. Internationally, and do¬mestically, The Hospitality workers on cruise ships have a wide variety of duties, all the way from a room porter to a Captain of the ship. All of these jobs are important for the function of any ship for safe travel. The Military, or any Armed Forces, are great choices also, I did see some Sales, Military Sales, some type of Investigator ISD for American International investigations probably falling under law enforce¬ment detective etc. or the FBI and the CIA are great choices if you like a challenge. The wildlife federa¬tion is a great cause if you are interested in the care of large animals. Another great choice would be marketing fields or management for many international companies that do business in the U.S. and abroad. Most musicians are on the road for touring and do go to multiple counties if they are good and in demand at what they do. You must be very talented for that however if you choose that sky is the limit for you. It and networking are great careers I saw a job in Dubai the other day that called for travel on indeed .com. You may want to use a search engine and see what jobs are high in demand for travel that would give you a good reference point for a career choice. Any type of Brand, or Marketing, man-agement in all areas you can travel with companies whom do international business. Foreign Militaries, Ministry, the Red Cross. Peace workers, aides, truck driving contracting internationally train conductor for domestic travel, any type of ship or fishing, boats, or ships etc.

Any armed forces will offer , education, a Veterans bill for housing is a great benefit to The military is frequent travel internationally, to Germany, Korea, Quam, Thailand, the States, Iraq, Af¬rica, many more places not listed. International sales management, consultant for companies this would require a degree in foreign affairs and business. International business, there are environmental compa¬nies that are reaching out to multiple countries on environmental issues. If you choose to aim high a great choice could be Astrology or NASA for space travel. . They have conferences all over the world that you can attend if you go into It. Cyber security is high in demand or any IT field would be a great field if you like to go to conferences and set up and maintain equipment for others. A great question, a different path that I have gone down to travel and make money is sales. The opportunity to travel and see the world and make money while doing it. This could be a good opportunity to experience people and culture in different parts of the world and develops life skills that can be incorporated across different industries if returning back home.

Herman’s Answer

Hello Aiden,

There are certainly a lot of careers that will allow you to travel around the world. I am personally in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry working in clinical research. Clinical research is the testing of new therapies in human volunteers. Medicine you or a family member have taken have gone through testing to make sure its effective and safe before being available on the market. Some of my colleagues are travelling up to 80% of their time at work all around the world making sure that the research is done correctly and ethically. It's a very rewarding career and if you are interested in biology, healthcare, or the sciences, it could be a great choice!
Hope this helps and hope you have a grand happy new year.

Best,
Herman

Thank you comment icon Thank you, yes it does help! I am trying to make a list of all the possible options of fields that I can pursue as a career. Aiden

One of the sure-fire ways I know to get into traveling abroad is to make it into a large company with international reach. The ones I am most familiar with are the big 4 accounting firms: KMPG, Deloitte, EY, and PwC. These are large auditing firms with international reach. If you can get an internship with one of these companies, do so. If you are able to land a job with one of them someday, you can work with your career team to work towards getting transferred into another country. Just know that the busy seasons can be long, with many people work 70+ hours a week during busy season, so make sure you know the cost of the opportunity up front.

Hi Aiden,
Great question.
I know of several people who have interesting and meaningful careers in the United States Aid to International Development. USAID is part of the State Dept. and needs people in many different areas of study and has positions around the world. If you are a citizen in the US it would be a great program to look into.
Good luck with your future plans.
