How early should I start looking for scholarships?

I am going to be a first generation college kid while also having a history in the foster care system. I know I will not be able to pay for college without serious debt and wanted to know if there is any way -like scholarships- to be able to go to my dream school- St. John Fisher.

Hello Azeal,.
You should start immediately!
It's great to hear that you're considering scholarships to help fund your college education. Starting early is always a good idea when it comes to searching for scholarships. Here's a timeline that can guide you:

Freshman and sophomore years of high school: While it may be too early to apply for scholarships, this is a good time to start researching and familiarizing yourself with the types of scholarships available. Begin exploring websites, scholarship databases, and resources provided by your school or community organizations.

Junior year of high school: This is when you can start actively searching and applying for scholarships. Look for both national and local scholarships that align with your background, interests, or intended field of study. Pay attention to deadlines and requirements, and begin working on your application materials, such as essays and recommendation letters.

Senior year of high school: This is the critical year for scholarship applications. Continue searching and applying for scholarships, keeping in mind any specific deadlines. Additionally, stay in touch with your school's guidance counselor or college advisor, as they can provide valuable information and support throughout the process.

Remember that there are scholarships available specifically for first-generation college students and individuals with a history in the foster care system. These scholarships may be offered by foundations, non-profit organizations, or even the college or university itself. Research and reach out to these resources to find opportunities that cater to your unique circumstances.

Finally, make sure to also explore financial aid options, including grants and work-study programs, as they can supplement your scholarship search. St. John Fisher College may have its own scholarships and financial aid resources, so be sure to check their website or contact their financial aid office for specific information.
I wish you Good luck in your search for scholarships and hope to see you attend St. John Fisher college. Success in your next step!
